Alexander (Questioner), Amy (Speaker) and Jessica (Chair) are presented with the winners’ shield by Mr Derek Morgan, OBE, DL and Mrs Anne Morgan MBE, DL.
Yesterday’s final of the Wales Schools Public Speaking Competition was held in the splendid surroundings of the Great Hall at Howell’s School, Llandaff. Having come through earlier rounds in online competition, the five teams, who were meeting one another in person for the first time, adapted well to a live audience.
Standards were extremely high with notable contributions from Amy (Argoed High School) who spoke with great confidence and conviction on the issue of driverless cars and we heard a passionate presentation on the responsibilities of journalism from Seth (Y Pant School) which could easily have been mistaken for the work of a seasoned parliamentarian. The four judges from the worlds of broadcasting, pubic relations and academia had some excellent advice for the young competitors and after some very detailed deliberations decided that the team from Argoed would be representing Wales at the Grand Final at Churchill College, Cambridge on Sunday, 8 May.
South Wales branch President, Captain Sir Norman Lloyd-Edwards, who presented certificates to all contestants, added his thanks and best wishes at the end of proceedings. This year, for the first time, the winners in Wales were presented with the Morgan Shield donated by retired South Wales Chair, Derek Morgan OBE, DL and Mrs Anne Morgan MBE, DL.

South Wales Final Judges: Mrs Kathy Kettle (radio producer and presenter), Mr Martyn Hurst (CEO public relations and advertising), Ms Ellie Bristow (Cardiff University and chair of South Wales Young Members Forum) and Mr Roy Noble (TV and radio broadcaster, author and educationalist).
