Empowering youth through oracy-focused education, competitions, and teacher training.

At the English-Speaking Union (ESU), we believe that every young person deserves the confidence and communication skills to succeed – in school, in work, and in life. That’s why our educational programmes place oracy – the ability to speak and listen effectively – at their heart.

From national competitions to teacher development and global connections, we offer a dynamic range of opportunities for students and educators alike.

Competitions: Debate, Speak, Perform

Our flagship competitions challenge students to think critically, speak persuasively and listen actively – all key skills for life beyond the classroom.

Whether it’s debating global issues in the ESU Schools’ Mace Debating Competition [linked], putting speaking and listening skills to the test in the unique format of the ESU Public Speaking Competition [linked], or showcasing oracy alongside performance in the ESU Performing Shakespeare Competition [linked], there’s something for every student.

Open to all secondary schools in England and Wales, our competitions offer life-changing opportunities for young people to shine.

CPD: Equipping Teachers, Transforming Classrooms

Our expert-led CPD helps teachers embed oracy into everyday teaching. Blending the latest oracy theory with real world classroom practice, our sessions provide ready-to-use techniques to boost student engagement across subjects, develop whole-school oracy strategies and build teacher confidence in delivering public speaking and debate activities.

Flexible delivery means training can be tailored to suit your needs – from one-off sessions to longer-term programmes.

Awards: Recognising Excellence

The ESU-Rutland Oracy Awards celebrate individuals and schools who champion oracy and communication education. With our prestigious Oracy Culture Award and brand-new Oracy Teacher Award, we honour those making a real impact in their communities.

Is your school leading the way in oracy? We want to hear from you.

International: Connecting Classrooms, Changing Lives

With a presence in over 50 countries, the ESU connects students and educators around the world through the power of oracy. Whether you’re looking to inspire young speakers, develop your staff or build global connections, our international programmes are designed to support and empower learners everywhere.

From fun, interactive Discover Your Voice student workshops and expert-led teacher CPD, to running your own Debate Academy summer programme or visiting our historic headquarters in London, there’s a world of opportunity waiting.

We’re also proud to host the International Public Speaking Competition [linked], the largest of its kind, engaging over 100,000 students worldwide each year.

Join a global movement committed to giving young people the tools they need to speak up, listen well and lead with confidence.
