Statement on UK riots

It is disturbing to see riots on the streets of the UK. We deplore violence and the divisions that it will drive.

Using dialogue, discussion and debate to build understanding and friendship is core to what we do at the English-Speaking Union.

All those who make up our country must be able to speak without fear, to be heard and be able to play a part in building the communities and the nations we need today. It has been heartening to see the positive responses that have taken place around the country and we encourage more inclusive discussions.

Charles Byrne CBE
Director-General & Secretary General of the English-Speaking Union
