The first two of five heats of the 2019 Churchill Public Speaking Competition organized under the auspices of the Colchester & Essex branch were held in Basildon and Westcliff-on-sea.
In the former, the award for best chair was given to Tanay Sonawane of Brentford School, that for best speaker to Nicole Fergus of the same school and the prize for best questioner given to Ellie Healey of James Hornsby School. In addition, Daniel P of Woodlands School was nominated as the outstanding personality.
The team winners were Brentwood School Team 2 with James Hornsby School Team 1 as runners-up. Both progress to the branch final.
In the latter heat, the respective individual awards were given to James Anderson of St Thomas More School Team 1, Ethen Locke of Westcliff High school for Boys Team 2 and Haran Loganathan of the same team.
The team winners followed suit with Westcliff High school for Boys Team 2 and St Thomas More School Team 1 qualifying for the next round in first and second place.
Every participant received a certificate for having performed in the competition
