My Magna Carta is an international creative essay competition for 11 to 18 year olds in celebration of the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta. Young people from across the UK, the English-Speaking Union's member countries and throughout the Commonwealth are invited to create their very own Magna Carta for the 21st century: one document that safeguards and promotes the rights, privileges and liberties of either their own country or the whole world.
The English-Speaking Union
The ESU works principally with young people, providing opportunities to build skills and gain
experiences to help our beneficiaries realise their full potential.
We run a wide range of educational and cultural programmes, from scholarships for school
leavers, teachers and professionals; to ground-breaking persuasive speech training and
competitions involving hundreds of schools in the UK and internationally.
We are also a vibrant membership organisation, with over 5,000 members in England and Wales.
Our members are organised into 35 branches, each of which maintains its own programme of
events and supports schools in its local area in initiatives aligned with the ESU's objectives.
Royal Holloway, University of London, is celebrating 800 years since the sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215, less than two miles from the university. The celebrations during the anniversary year will comprise the creation of an app – Runnymede Explored – written by students from Geography, Biology, History, English, and Computer Science, to guide visitors around the Runnymede meadows, an online MOOC promoted by the University of London and the Library of Congress and created by the History, Geography and Politics departments, and a wide array of community and education projects on campus, in schools and other voluntary projects.
We will be staging the Great Charter Festival on Sunday 14 June 2015, in partnership with Surrey County Council, to celebrate the living tradition of liberty and protest that has grown from Magna Carta. We hope you can join us through one of these events or activities.
