The national search begins for the country’s best young public speaker

After a hiatus since 2019, the English-Speaking Union (ESU) Morocco is proud to announce its official relaunch under the leadership of Chair of Public Speaking Abdelmajid Bouziane and London-based strategic advisor Sangeeta Laudus. This revival marks the return of the 2026 National Public Speaking Contest, the premier platform for Moroccan students to showcase their eloquence and command of English on the global stage.

Since its inception at Al Akhawayn University in 1999, ESU Morocco has championed English-language proficiency as a vital instrument for cross-cultural exchange. Today, the Moroccan Ministry of Higher Education recognizes these oratorical skills as a cornerstone for developing the nation’s future thinkers and enhancing global social mobility. Professor Abdelmajid Bouziane emphasizes that the mastery of persuasive communication in English is far more than an academic asset. He notes that it is a fundamental requirement for human capital development in a globalized economy. Many previous winners have described their journey to the International Public Speaking Competition finals in London as a transformative experience that provided them with an invaluable international network and profound personal growth.

Eligibility and participation

Participation is open to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in higher education institutions across Morocco. The aim of the competition is to encourage ambitious young speakers, regardless of their primary field of study, to showcase their ability to articulate complex ideas with clarity and conviction. Prospective candidates should demonstrate a high level of English proficiency and a keen interest in global dialogue.

The competition themes:

  • Regional competitions (Morocco): “The power to question is the basis of all human progress.” — Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India
  • International Public Speaking Competition: “The light of a candle is transferred to another candle — Spring twilight.” — Haiku titled Lighting One Candle by Yosa Buson

The 2026 competition timeline

The selection process follows a clear path from regional excellence to international representation:

  1. Regional Competitions: March 15 – April 15, 2026: Regional qualifying rounds will be held across key academic hubs in Agadir, Beni Mellal, Casablanca, El Jadida, Fes, Kenitra, Marrakech, Meknes, Oujda, Laayoune, Tétouan, and Settat.
  2. National Competition: Last Week of April 2026, Morocco: The most distinguished speakers from across the Kingdom will gather for the National Final to select Morocco’s representative.
  3.  July 2026, London: The national champion will travel to London to compete in the ESU International Public Speaking Competition, joining participants from over 50 countries in a shared pursuit of rhetorical excellence.
