Membership and Engagement Coordinator

  • Job Title: Membership and Engagement Coordinator

The English-Speaking Union delivers education programmes and projects across England and Wales that enable a wide range of people to ‘discover their voice’. The majority of our programmes are delivered by ESU Oracy Trainers and Mentors who are based regionally and allow us to grow our programmes, and reach more young people across England and Wales.

About the role

The ESU is seeking an organised, proactive and diligent Membership and Engagement Coordinator to lead on the administrative support for our members and the wider Engagement team. The post holder will be responsible for providing a seamless experience for members wanting to join the ESU or for those renewing their membership. The Membership and Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for developing relationships with members and branch chairs, finding ways to involve members in the work of the ESU and maintaining oversight of the organisation’s CRM. The post holder will also help support the ESU’s events and international work.

Core responsibilities

  • Support the Membership Manager to implement a new recruitment strategy to grow ESU membership in agreed target audiences
  • Work with the Membership Manager to ensure a straightforward renewals process, this includes sending email and postal renewal communications, updating lapsed memberships and taking credit and debit card payments
  • Ensure membership records on the CRM are accurate and up-to-date
  • Assemble and dispatch Welcome Packs to new members
  • Act as the first point of contact for current and prospective members and assist with their queries
  • Assist with the production of monthly membership statistics and reports
  • Ensure the ESU has robust and clearly documented membership processes and make suggestions to enhance and resolve issues that arise
  • Maintain records of international ESUs and support the Director of Global Engagement with sending communications to this group
  • Liaise with branch chairs to support their requirements and provide details on membership statuses for their branch members
  • Meet prospective Dartmouth House members, talking to them about the ESU’s work and giving them tours of the House.
  • Provide administrative support to the wider Engagement team with ad hoc tasks

Job Title: Senior Oracy Coach.
Working hours: Shift work for the duration of the event ‘Debate Academy’ from 5th August to 10th August (must arrive at venue on 4th August). The duration of the contract is 1 week only.
Location: Lincolnshire.
Pay: £1,300 per week.

Debate Academy is an annual, week-long summer school, held in the United Kingdom during early August, dedicated to improving young people’s debating skills. The venue for Debate Academy 2024 is Stamford School. At Debate Academy students receive expert tuition on debating from experienced debaters. Students get the chance to discuss world issues, sharpen analytical, reasoning and public speaking skills, and spar with other students from all over the world in competitive debates. Oracy Coaches provide specialist tutoring to students, from ages 14 to 18, in a variety of competitive debating formats. Debate Academy will offer a tailored experience for all, whether students have little to no experience, or are preparing for trials for national debating teams.

About the role

We are looking for motivated and positive individuals to join us for a fun-filled week at our Debate Academy 2024. As a Senior Oracy Coach, you will ensure the smooth day-to-day running of Debate Academy and support Oracy Coaches along with ESU staff where needed. Our aim is to develop confidence through debating, and you have the ability to empower them throughout the week.

Core responsibilities

  • Support Oracy Coaches to deliver debate training in a range of different formats.
  • Help to provide feedback to students based on debating expertise.

IPSC Oracy Coach

Job Title: IPSC Oracy Coach
Contract: Shift Work (must be available between 13th May and  18th May inclusive.
Location: London (travel involved throughout the week)
Pay: £600 per week. All expenses including accommodation, food, and travel will be provided for by the ESU.

The International Public Speaking Competition is at the heart of the English-Speaking Union’s mission, bringing together oracy, cultural exchange and a hefty dose of friendly rivalry. The competition brings the best young speakers from all over the world to London for a week of cultural exchange and public speaking contests. It will run between 13 and 17 May inclusive, and staff will be required to be available throughout this period, including the night of 12 May. Staff will be accommodated in a hotel in London.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting and promoting the charitable objectives of the ESU;
  • Acting as an ambassador for the organisation and promoting education programmes and opportunities to support our work;
  • Following and promoting the ESU’s safeguarding and equity policies;
  • Providing public speaking training and workshops;
  • Providing logistical support to the IPSC lead and ESU Staff;
  • Facilitating cultural exchange between students from around the world
  • Supervising excursions and social events;
  • Providing pastoral care where needed.

Competition Lead

Job Title: Competition Lead
Reports to: Competitions Manager
Contract: 0 hours
Location: A mix of zoom and in person heats across the UK
Pay: Zoom heat fee £40, In-person heat £80 plus reasonable travel expenses

The English-Speaking Union delivers high-quality oracy education programmes and projects across England and Wales. We believe every child should be able to make their voice heard and that oracy – speaking and listening – skills play a key part in this. Our debating, public speaking, and cultural exchange programmes aim to embed sustainable cultures of oracy in schools, and empower young people to engage with the world, to speak more confidently, and to listen to and understand different points of view.

ESU Competition Leads host our ESU competitions including the Schools’ Mace, the ESU-Churchill Public Speaking Competition and the Performing Shakespeare Competition. The ESU Competition Lead will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of heats throughout the competitions with duties including Zoom hosting, MCing, judging and providing constructive feedback to students and teachers participating. You will also support and provide guidance for our volunteer judges, ensuring they have a positive experience volunteering with the ESU.

ESU Oracy Leader

Job Title:  ESU Oracy Leader
Location: Opportunities across England and Wales throughout the academic year.
Contract: 0 hours
Pay: £100 for a single workshop or £180 for a double workshop.

Are you looking for a flexible opportunity to develop your teaching skills in a growing charity?

It’s an exciting time to be joining our pool of ESU Oracy Leaders. In 2023 we redeveloped our Discover Your Voice workshops for primary and secondary schools in England and Wales.

We are now looking for confident teachers and individuals with experience working with young people to join our team and support us with our mission to equip the next generation with the speaking and listening skills they need to thrive by giving them high quality oracy training.

Workshops focus on debating and public speaking. We cater towards all abilities and experience levels, so the ideal ESU Oracy Leader would be capable of developing students’ confidence.

By joining us at the ESU, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference to students and become an expert in the field of oracy through our training.

Candidates who fulfil the criteria in the person specification will be asked to take part in a pre-screening telephone interview.

Following these, successful candidates will be asked to attend a group interview on Zoom (date to be confirmed).

This will be followed by an online training session led by the ESU education department on (Date to be confirmed).

Other roles

The ESU is always keen to hear from enthusiastic and experienced teachers, debaters and public speakers to:

  • help us deliver our debating and public-speaking programmes, workshops and competitions
  • support participants during our residential Debate Academy and the International Public Speaking Competition

These are paid roles with training provided. We cover the cost of a Child Protection Level 2 qualification and an Enhanced DBS Disclosure for all teaching staff. These roles are a great opportunity to gain practical experience and to share your skills with young people to improve their communication skills and boosting their confidence so they can realise their full potential.
