DR MARK CREES

English teacher, author, Chairman of the Rutherford Society.

MARK RUTHERFORD’S PEOPLE

Hale White was born in Bedford in 1831 and educated at Bedford Modern School. A nonconformist in religion and a civil servant and journalist. For his novels he assumed the pseudonym, Mark Rutherford. Dr Crees’s presentation will partly be a talk on Rutherford’s life and partly a dramatic reading of extracts from his novels to give a flavour of Rutherford’s writing.    The characters in the novels are full of doubts and questions and private sorrows, for example, the trainee preacher who questions his faith. Rutherford: a human, sensitive writer.
