The English-Speaking Union offers up to three grants a year, worth $40,000 each, for postdoctoral scientists to carry out their research at a host institution in the USA. The Lindemann Trust Fellowships are awarded to graduates who have shown exceptional promise and the capacity to produce original research in the applied sciences.
These Fellowships enable postdoctoral scientists to pursue research in the USA without financial difficulty, and without being obliged to take up paid employment. We also offer a £500 grant to each Fellow to assist with travel costs. Following a legacy left by Brigadier Charles Lindemann, the ESU has run the Fellowships since March 1972.
Each fellowship last for one year and supports research in the fields of astronomy, biophysics, chemistry, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics and physics.
Applications for the Lindemann Trust Fellowships are now closed.
To be eligible to apply, candidates must be British, Irish or Commonwealth citizens, resident in the UK, and have completed a doctorate within the last 3 academic years, or be expecting to complete this academic year at the latest. Candidates should complete an application form and send two confidential references and a letter of endorsement from their proposed host institution.
Successful applicants will be invited to interview with the Lindemann Committee and members of the ESU’s international team. Fellowships may then be taken up anytime between September and April of the following academic year.
