The SSE Reunion and £85,000 for 85 years Appeal

Friday 10 February 2012 7:00 pm - :

Join us to celebrate the longest running ESU programme - the Secondary School Exchange Scholarship (formerly British and American Schoolboy Scholarship). We are often told of the life-changing nature of this programme and its ability to broaden the horizons of scholars both academically and socially.

The ESU invites you to join us for the SSE reunion; a chance to reminisce with old friends, hear of the latest experiences of SSE scholars who attended the same schools as you did, and revisit the place where it all began - Dartmouth House.

The dress code for this event is smart casual.

Tickets are £30 to include a two-course hot buffet supper and glass of wine or soft drink. There will also be a cash bar. All profits from this event go directly to supporting our programme of charitable activities.

For further information, or to book a place at this event, please contact Kate Bond

£85,000 for 85 years Appeal

We will be officially launching the £85,000 for 85 years Appeal at the SSE Reunion Dinner. In 2012 the ESU's SSE (formerly BASS) scholarship celebrates its 85th Anniversary.

The SSE scholarship was launched in 1928 by Father Sill, Headmaster of the Kent School in Conneticut. Kent School, along with other New England schools - Andover, Pomfret, Loomis and Choate, offered scholarships to boys wishing to undertake one year in the sixth form in American schools.

The SSE allows students to study subjects which do not feature in the British School syllabus without the pressure of A-levels. The study skills that can be gained from the exchange have proven to be beneficial at university: American teaching emphasises independence of thought and discussions play a large part in the classroom. Students gain independence, a wider outlook and increased maturity which will be of benefit to them at university and in their future career.

We want to build a fund to enable us to share £5,000 per annum between the scholars who apply for financial assistance.

In 2013 we will award one scholar (in need of financial assistance) £5,000 to cover the cost of flights and expenses for the year.

All contributions are gratefully received for this appeal. If you feel you are able to contribute please contact Jo Wedderspoon, Director of Fundraising and Development, at jo.wedderspoon@esu.org or 020 7529 1576.
