DESCRIPTION:‘Royal Navy Hovercraft in the Falkland Islands’ by Cdr Vernon Phillips RN (Retd) \nThe Hovercraft was a relatively new invention in 1967 when Commander Vernon Phillips was sent to the Falkland Islands to put the craft through sea trials. He will share his stories of his year on the South Atlantic’s waves\, together with tales of some of the famous names associated with the islands. Vernon got to see a lot of the overseas territory\, exploring the windswept wilderness and seeing wonderful wildlife. DESCRIPTION:The Salisbury branch AGM will be followed by a talk by Oriental carpet specialist Harriet Sandys about her experiences in central Asia. Entitled ‘Beyond that last Blue Mountain’\, it will cover the fascinating story of her time in Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion and what she did to help the refugees there\, her travels with the Peshmerga in the newly-liberated Iraqi Kurdistan in 1991\, and her time spent with a group of unemployed builders and decorators driving convoys of food and aid from Croydon to the Muslim enclaves in Bosnia Herzegovina in 1994. \nThe event will be held at The White Hart Hotel\, 1 St John’s St\, Salisbury SP1 2SD. SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: ‘Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA’ Isobel Williams
DESCRIPTION:Isobel is a retired Consultant in Respiratory Medicine.  While qualifying at St George’s Hospital\, University of London\, where Edward Wilson\, Robert Scott’s friend and confidant\, had trained some sixty-five years previously\, she saw many of Wilson’s iconic pictures of Antarctica and became fascinated by the continent and the explorers of the early 1900s. She has written several books about them and speaks regularly on Antarctic subjects and Antarctic heroes. \nEdward Wilson and his wife made their home in Bushey\, Hertfordshire.  When Isobel visited Bushey Museum to learn more about them\, she found the museum was more interested in their celebrity von Herkomer\, who had lived in the town for forty years. \nHerkomer was a Bavarian who became one of the most popular artists in the Victorian period in England. He painted many interesting portraits of the good and the great in England and in Boston U.S.A. He was so much accepted that he was invited to paint Queen Victoria on her death bed\, an unusual honour for a commoner and\, though a nationalized British citizen\, a German. His fall from popularity was dramatic; he died at the onset of the First World War and by the end of that war\, anti-German sentiment was rife in Britain. Also\, by this time\, appreciation of styles of painting had changed greatly with the advent of Modernism that was contrasted unfavourably with his naturalism. SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: ‘The Mary Rose’ Edward Towne MA MSt PGCE
DESCRIPTION:Edward Towne graduated in European Studies from the University of East Anglia and later achieved a PGCE from Cambridge\, an MA in Early Modern English History from the University of London and a MSt in Twentieth Century British History from the University of Oxford. His professional career was spent teaching History in state and independent Secondary Schools. Currently\, Edward lectures to adults in a variety of organisations and acts as a reviewer and tour leader on historical topics. \nThe “Mary Rose”\, the pride of Henry VIII’s fleet\, was launched in 1512 and saw service against the French in the 1520’s.  In 1545\, the Mary Rose put out from Portsmouth Harbour to engage a French invasion fleet but sank with heavy loss of life as Henry VIII and his courtiers watched.  The reason for the sinking is hotly debated:  accurate French cannon fire\, a freak wave\, poor seamanship and overmanning are all suggested. \nAfter several unsuccessful attempts at salvage the remains of the hull were raised in 1982 and are now displayed at Portsmouth Dockyard. \nCheques payable to ‘English-Speaking Union’ should be sent at least 7 days in advance to: \nMrs Louise Jeffreys\, Greenrock\, Francis Way\, Salisbury SP2 8EF \nFurther details: esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org; 01722 336118

DESCRIPTION:Dawn Chatty is an American social anthropologist and academic\, who specialises in the Middle East\, nomadic pastoral tribes\, and refugees. From 2010 to 2015\, she was Emeritus Professor of Anthropology and Forced Migration at the University of Oxford. Her book ‘Syria: The Making and Unmaking of a Refuge State’ was published by Hurst & Co in 2018. \nThe mass influx of peoples into Syria over the last 150 years\, including Circassians\, Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews\, Armenian\, Albanians\, Kosovars\, created a modern nation of great cultural hybridity. Until recently this was the source of its openness to contemporary waves of forced migrants including Palestinians\, Lebanese\, and Iraqis. Now\, with the tables turned\, nearly 50 per cent of Syrians have sought refuge and sanctuary among its neighbouring states. DESCRIPTION:“Sailing Around the World” \nPeter Forbes \nAt the age of 8\, Peter Forbes was taught to sail by his mother in a felucca at the confluence of the Blue and the White Nile in Khartoum. This early happy experience engendered a lifelong love for sailing and for the sea and led to the nurturing of a dream over the intervening years to sail around the world. A meeting with Italian beer baron\, Rudi Peroni\, led to the acquisition of Carango\, his beautiful 54ft yacht and to the training in its management. By 2015 Peter and Vicky\, his wife\, were ready to set sail and to fulfil this dream by embarking upon their great journey.
