Salisbury & Wiltshire

WELCOME TO

the Salisbury & South Wiltshire branch

of the English-Speaking Union

As a member of the ESU you can take part in our social, educational and cultural programmes and attend events both in the UK and abroad. Local fundraisers and competition heats will enable you to support young people in your community.

As a UK member you receive a number of further benefits. These include priority access to Dartmouth House, our beautiful London Headquarters, regular e-news updates, a copy of our Members’ magazine and invitations to special events.

As well as organising monthly speaker meetings, this branch has spearheaded work in local secondary schools and its teams have competed very successfully in the UK Public Speaking Competition.

I look forward to welcoming you into the ESU family!

Salisbury & South Wiltshire

Meet the Chairman

Salisbury is a thriving region with some 200 members. We support a number of educational activities that include working with primary schools and with fifteen local state secondary schools to encourage improved standards in both written and spoken English. We also support the UK Public Speaking Competition by organising local heats, the winners of which progress to the regional and then, if they are successful, to the national finals.  We are very proud that a team from South Wilts Grammar School for Girls in Salisbury has won the national competition for 3 out of the past 4 years. We promote and organise locally Public Speaking Workshops where specialist members of staff from Dartmouth House come down and spend a day teaching public speaking skills in local schools.

On the social side, we run a monthly programme of speakers and lunches for members and guests from September to April each year and hold an annual Summer Lecture in the Cathedral Close.  If you think that you might be interested in helping us, either on the educational side or on the social side, or you would simply like to become a member and attend our monthly talks and lunches please do get in touch with our membership secretary Nigel Estlick at nigelestlick@gmail.com or call him on 01980 623087.

We would love to hear from you.
