WELCOME TO

the South Wales branch

of the English-Speaking Union

As a member of the ESU you can take part in our social, educational and cultural programmes and attend events both in the UK and abroad. Local fundraisers and competition heats will enable you to support young people in your community.

As a UK member you receive a number of further benefits. These include priority access to Dartmouth House, our beautiful London Headquarters, regular e-news updates, a copy of our Members’ magazine and invitations to special events.

This large and fast-growing branch regularly organise high-quality talks and is active in promoting and organising core ESU programmes such as the UK Public Speaking Competition and Performing Shakespeare.

I look forward to welcoming you into the ESU family!

Meet the Chairman

Welcome to the South Wales Branch of the English-Speaking Union. With around 370 members we are the second largest Branch after London and this provides two particular benefits.

First, we have welcomed eminent speakers including Lords Lisvane; Strathcarron, Hattersley, Hunt, Hurd, Dobbs and Watson; Sir Christopher Meyer; Lady Carnarvon; Colin Dexter; Martin Bell; Stanley Johnson; and Sir Richard Dearlove, former Head of MI6.

We meet at the Cardiff City Stadium and the combination of excellent speakers, a most convivial atmosphere and a welcoming venue have proven to be a recipe for success. Other social activities include a Summer Garden Party at Fonmon Castle, and Christmas Carols and Supper at Howell`s School, Llandaff.

Second, the funds we raise from our social functions are devoted to our charitable activities including public speaking competitions for primary and secondary school pupils, the latter winners then competing in the final of the UK Public Speaking Competition at Churchill College, Cambridge.

The finalists in our Performing Shakespeare competition have competed successfully at a national level. In 2015, our young aspiring actors won all three awards at the Performing Shakespeare UK Final and this year Manon Keeble and Steffan Leonard from Swansea won the Don Miller Audience Prize.

Do get in touch, we'd love to welcome you to a future event.
