Bury St Edmunds & Suffolk

WELCOME TO

the Suffolk branch

of the English-Speaking Union

As a member of the ESU you can take part in our social, educational and cultural programmes and attend events both in the UK and abroad. Local fundraisers and competition heats will enable you to support young people in your community.

As a UK member you receive a number of further benefits. These include priority access to Dartmouth House, our beautiful London Headquarters, regular e-news updates, a copy of our Members’ magazine and invitations to special events.

As well as meetings in this beautiful and historic cathedral town, this branch arranges occasional visits to places of interest and actively supports local heats of the ESU’s UK Public Speaking Competition.

I look forward to welcoming you into the ESU family!

Meet the Chairman

A warm welcome to the Suffolk Branch of the English-Speaking Union!

The beautiful and historic cathedral town of Bury St Edmunds is steeped in history. The meeting of the Barons prior to the signing of the Magna Carta took place in the Old Abbey, where many years earlier the body of King Edmund was laid on the high after he was slain by the Danes. Thus the name "Bury St Edmunds"

The Branch programme of events includes lunches with a speaker and afternoon teas both held in the delightful Nowton Park Hotel. Visits are arranged to visit places of interest, and coffee mornings are also on the programme enabling members to meet socially.

Members of the ESU Suffolk Branch come from throughout the County, and the age group varies: you are never too young or too old to join.

The ESU UK Public Speaking Competition is well supported and we always welcome help to organise this competition which, along with other ESU educational programmes such as the Performing Shakespeare Competition, the School’s Mace and the mentor-led Discover Your Voice workshops lie at the core of the ESU’s educational aims.

So, if you are passionate about helping to equip the young with the life skills and confidence they so need in today's world, please get in touch. You will be making a real difference to your local community as well as joining a worldwide organisation dedicated to improving the life chances of young people everywhere.

We look forward to welcoming you to our branch!
