WELCOME TO

the Bristol branch

of the English-Speaking Union

As a member of the ESU you can take part in our social, educational and cultural programmes and attend events both in the UK and abroad. Local fundraisers and competition heats will enable you to support young people in your community.

As a UK member you receive a number of further benefits. These include priority access to Dartmouth House, our beautiful London Headquarters, regular e-news updates, a copy of our Members’ magazine and invitations to special events.

The ESU Bristol Branch is a lively branch that meets regularly and actively supports the UK Public Speaking Competition and Performing Shakespeare as well as funding Discover Your Voice workshops in local schools.

Meet the Chairman

Welcome to the ESU Bristol Branch.

Locally, we organise two heats for the Public Speaking Competition, for Bristol pupils in Years 9 -11, and later a final, with the winning team taking part in the South West Regional Final. We fund Discover Your Voice workshops for local schools, which is a flagship programme organised by Dartmouth House, and host the Performing Shakespeare Competition for pupils in Years 7-9 in the region, with two local performers qualifying for the final in London.

We hold regular meetings in the Apostle Room of Clifton Catholic Cathedral with highly qualified speakers on subjects as diverse as ‘Women and Leadership’ and ‘Samuel Johnson – a life in writing’. We have at least two social functions during our season (which runs from September to July) – including a New Year’s party and a summer party – usually in a member’s home or garden.

We hope you might join us!
