WELCOME TO

the Bristol branch

of the English-Speaking Union

As a member of the ESU you can take part in our social, educational and cultural programmes and attend events both in the UK and abroad. Local fundraisers and competition heats will enable you to support young people in your community.

As a UK member you receive a number of further benefits. These include priority access to Dartmouth House, our beautiful London Headquarters, regular e-news updates, a copy of our Members’ magazine and invitations to special events.

The ESU Bristol Branch is a lively branch that meets regularly and actively supports the UK Public Speaking Competition and Performing Shakespeare as well as funding Discover Your Voice workshops in local schools.

I look forward to welcoming you into the ESU family!

Meet the Chairman

Please, may I welcome you to the ESU Bristol Branch. We have over 200 members, many of whom you will know from other societies and organisations.

Locally, we organise two heats for the UK Public Speaking Competition, for Bristol pupils in Years 10-11, and later a final, with the winning team taking part in the South West Regional Final. We fund Discover Your Voice workshops for local schools, which is a flagship programme organised by Dartmouth House, and have just started to take part in the Performing Shakespeare Competition for pupils in Years 7-9, with two local performers qualifying for the final in London.

We usually have between one and three social functions during our season (which runs from September to July) These may be a Christmas or summer party (usually in a member’s home or garden), a literary or Thanksgiving Dinner or some special celebration e.g. our 75th anniversary.
