Bedfordshire & Milton Keynes

WELCOME TO

the Ouse Valley branch

of the English-Speaking Union

As a member of the ESU you can take part in our social, educational and cultural programmes and attend events both in the UK and abroad. Local fundraisers and competition heats will enable you to support young people in your community.

As a UK member you receive a number of further benefits. These include priority access to Dartmouth House, our beautiful London Headquarters, regular e-news updates, a copy of our Members’ magazine and invitations to special events.

This large and active branch arranges regular lunchtime and evening talks and is particularly active in the support and organisation of public speaking competitions in Primary schools.

I look forward to welcoming you into the ESU family!

Ouse Valley

Meet the Chairman

The ESU Ouse Valley Branch serves an area focused on Bedford, but that reaches out into Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, as well a covering Milton Keynes and Luton.

We are the largest branch, by membership numbers, in the East Region and we raise funds through lunches and dinners with high quality speakers. We are currently supporting two exchange students in the USA and are active promoters of public speaking competitions, including the Bedford junior public speaking competition for seven to nine year-olds that we inaugurated. We have this year launched our debate academy for even younger participants, with very satisfactory results. We also support the East Region's sixth-form public speaking initiative and have invited teams from local sixth forms to take part in the annual Bedford Sixth-Form debate evening.

We have contributed to the national launch of Performing Shakespeare and are pleased to see that, like our other activities, this is supported by schools in both the public and private sectors. The branch is fortunate to have a good working relationship with the University of Bedfordshire that allows our members to attend the Vice-Chancellor's series of public policy lectures by distinguished academics and notable political figures. The membership is active in seeking new members of all ages.
