DESCRIPTION:The London Branch of the ESU is joined by best-selling author\, Charles Spicer\, who will tell us the incredible true story of the amateur intelligence agents who befriended the Nazis in the lead-up to the Second World War. \nA Telegraph History Book of the Year\, ‘Coffee with Hitler: The British Amateurs Who Tried to Civilise the Nazis’ offers a rare glimpse into the motley crew who would provide the British government with better intelligence on the horrifying rise of the Nazis than anyone else. \nAbout Charles Spicer: \nCharles Spicer’s first book\, Coffee with Hitler: The British Amateurs Who Tried to Civilise the Nazis was published in September 2022 by Oneworld Publications in the UK\, Pegasus Book in the US\, and worldwide on audio by Blackstone. Following a career in the City specialising in the medical sector\, he now chairs several public and private companies and a government grant-giving body. He is a warden of the Fishmongers’ Company\, deputy chair of the Royal Humane Society\, and served as High Sheriff of Greater London in 2019. Charles has a PhD in history from London University\, an MA from Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

DESCRIPTION:Following a debut performance at Marseille’s Théâtre de la Mer\, Moovida Académie brings Red\, Black\, and Ignorant to Dartmouth House on 4 July. \nThis highly relevant\, dystopian play\, first performed at the Barbican in 1996\, looks at the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust with drama and sensitivity. \nIt is the fruit of a partnership that started with an English Summer School sponsored by Nick Hill’s Aix-Marseille Branch. Three years later\, with the support of the US and British Embassies in Paris\, Moovida Académie boasts a vibrant English language section. \nNassim Bouguezzi\, a Moovida alumnus with a successful TV and cinema career\, will lead the cast in London. \nAfter the performance\, we are hosting our annual Fourth of July party in honour of the ESU’s Birthday. Please click the link below for more information. \nThe Play: \nRed\, Black and Ignorant is the first opus of the War Plays’ trilogy\, by the British playwright Edward Bond. Originally published in 1985\, during the late Cold War\, the plays bear Hiroshima’s sequels and the fear of nuclear war. Inspired by agitprop partisan theatre\, the nine acts of the play display essential aspects of life\, yet always jousting with paradoxes (Learning\, Love\, Eating\, Selling\, Working…) \nMoovida Académie: \nThis rendition of Red\, Black and Ignorant is produced by Ph’Art et Balises\, a non-profit organisation that has been based in Marseilles’ most deprived areas for 17 years. Its mission is to tackle the deficit of education in priority education zones\, which strikes even more art and culture careers: audiovisual\, cinema\, performing art and music. Each year\, Moovida Cinema and Theatre Academy assists one hundred talented young people from Marseille\, through an alternative training course on cinema\, audiovisual and performing arts careers\, that requires no degree. It will be the first of a new occasional series exploring aspects of monarchy in Britain\, how it works and what are its challenges today. \nLord-lieutenant Julie Spence’s Bio: \nJulie Spence has had a long and industrious career spanning nearly four decades. In 2010 she received the Queens Police Medal\, followed in 2021 when she received the Commander of Order of St John for her services to the St John’s Ambulance and the Order of St John. Julie was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 80th Birthday honours for her management of complex and contentious organisational issues. As well as her strong leadership and determination in taking forward the Gender Agenda and the development of the British Association of Women Policing. Helen’s new book ‘How to Raise a Viking\,’ will be released on 15\, February and this talk at the ESU will touch on all aspects of her book\, as well as her new lifestyle. \nAfter a decade of living in Denmark and raising a family there\, author and speaker Helen Russell noticed that Nordic children are different to children back home. They eat differently. They learn differently. They run\, jump and climb out in nature for hours a day\, even though the weather is terrible and dark from October to March. And then they grow up to be some of the happiest adults on the planet. Her question was: ‘how?’ Helen will unpack this complex question in her talk at the ESU. \nHelen will discuss the important part that oracy has played in her career and how oracy can be used to foster happiness in children\, not just in Danish societies but across the world. \nAbout Helen: \nFormerly editor of marieclaire.co.uk turned Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian\, her first book\, The Year of Living Danishly\, became an international bestseller\, and optioned for television. She’s the author of five books\, translated into 21 languages. Helen now writes for magazines and newspapers globally\, including The Times\, The Sunday Times\, the Telegraph\, the Independent\, National Geographic\, Wall Street Journal\, the Observer\, Grazia and Stylist. She lives in Denmark with three children and an unruly dog.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of informative and exciting conversation with Robert Ward\, Japan Chair and Director of Geo-economics and Strategy at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). Robert will be discussing why geopolitics matters and providing an overview of key geopolitical issues affecting today’s world. \nThe talk will begin at 6.30pm and guests are welcome to arrive from 6pm. The talk will be followed by networking in the Dartmouth House bar. \nRoberts Bio: \nRobert Ward is the IISS Japan Chair\, carrying out independent research and writing extensively on strategic issues related to Japan\, including its contemporary security and foreign policies. He is also co-author of a book on Japan for the IISS’s Adelphi series: Japan’s Effectiveness as a Geo-economic Power. He also leads the Institute’s  Geo-economics\, Geopolitics and Strategy research programme\, which focuses on a range of issues including global economic governance\, rules and standards setting\, and how economic coercion impacts policy at a national and corporate level. \nPrior to joining the IISS in 2019\, Robert was Editorial Director at The Economist Intelligence Unit\, a sister company of The Economist Newspaper. In this capacity\, he led the EIU’s country and industry analysis and forecasting teams. He was also a member of the EIU’s Executive Committee. Robert lived and worked in Japan from 1989 to 1996\, latterly holding a position in Japan’s largest credit-rating agency\, The Japan Bond Research Institute. DESCRIPTION:The secret’s out! We’re hosting a Sofar sounds show on Thursday\, 21 December. Snag your tickets via the link below. The best part? The artists remain a mystery – you’ll find out who they are when they take the mic! \n\nThis show is part of an intimate acoustic gig series with Mumbli. This stripped back show is created for deeper connectivity\, whilst enabling those who are sensitive to sound or have hearing challenges\, to enjoy an elevated Sofar experience. \n\nPlease note: that it is a floor seating only event and therefore there will not be chairs available\, attendees are welcome to bring cushions. \nThe event will start promptly at 7pm and finish at 10pm\, guests are welcome to arrive at Dartmouth House from 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:South Wales Branch: Christmas at Howell's
DESCRIPTION:Join the South Wales Branch of the ESU for their annual traditional celebration of Christmas\, at Howell’s School\, Llandaff from Thursday\, 14  December. \nThe shape of the evening will follow the pattern of previous years with drinks in the day room at 5.30pm followed by musical performances and carols from six with supper at about 6.45pm. Members are kindly requested to remember that Howell’s is a busy place and will be ready to welcome you from 5.20pm but earlier arrivals might cause inconvenience in the parking areas and congestion in the building. \nThe ticket price will include a two-course dinner and pre-dinner drinks.
