DESCRIPTION:“Yet\, in all this quiet\, there was an acute\, an acrid consciousness of a restrained hostility very near to us\, like a dog on a leash that might be let go at any moment.” \nJoin us for ‘An Evening of ‘Ghost Stories by M. R. James’ at Dartmouth House. \nGet tickets here \nACT 1: ‘The Mezzotint’ follows Mr Williams\, the curator of a university art museum\, who receives a mezzotint from an art dealer. What Mr Williams comes to discover is that the picture appears to move every time he looks at it. But the story the mezzotint is showing is something far more sinister than Mr Williams first thought… \nACT 2: In ‘Whistle and I’ll Come to You’\, a young professor\, whilst walking in an English coastal village\, stumbles upon a strange whistle. When blown\, this sets in motion a chain of unexpected events… \nThis performance will take place at Dartmouth House and begin at 6:30pm\, and run until 8:15pm. In these one-man performances\, Toby Burchell performs two chilling tales by the finest writer of the ghost story genre\, M. R. James. DESCRIPTION:Global Wars and Chaos – How did we Get Here and What’s the Solution?\n  \nJoin us for our annual Evelyn Wrench Lecture 2025\, delivered by Field Marshal The Lord Richards of Herstmonceux GCB CBE DSO DL.  \nGeneral The Lord Richards of Herstmonceux is a retired senior officer of the British Army and a distinguished member of the House of Lords.  Throughout a notable military career spanning four decades\, he commanded British and NATO forces in high-profile operations\, including in East Timor\, Sierra Leone\, and Afghanistan. \nRising to the highest professional rank in the British Army\, he served as Chief of the General Staff from 2009 and subsequently as Chief of the Defence Staff\, the professional head of the UK Armed Forces\, from 2010 to 2013. Elevated to the peerage upon retirement\, Lord Richards now sits as a Crossbench life peer in the House of Lords\, offering insight on defence and international affairs. \nThis event will raise funds for our essential charitable work. Schools have been competing in heats across the country to secure a place in the grand final at the San Wanamaker Playhouse. \nPlease note\, if you are attending as an audience member\, you consent to photos/videos being shared on our social media. If you are a school group and would like to attend with students. DESCRIPTION:The English-Speaking Union welcomes you to the Grand Final of the ESU Schools’ Mace debating competition\, taking place on Thursday\, 30 April at Dartmouth House\, London.  \nGuests are welcome to join us from 9am ready for the semi-finals to begin at 9.45am.  \nLight refreshments will be provided throughout the day; however\, we advise everybody to bring a packed lunch or to buy lunch from one of the nearby shops or cafes. Our staff will be on hand to offer directions on the day.   \nAttendees can enjoy the debates throughout the day\, as well as having the chance to meet and network with other guests.. At the end of the day\, the winning team will be awarded the Mace. General feedback will be offered to competing teams throughout by our expert judging panels. DESCRIPTION:Join the Salisbury Branch of the ESU for a talk by Caroline de Guitaut\, surveyor of the King’s Works of Art at the Royal Collection Trust. \nCaroline de Guitaut\, surveyor of The King’s Works of Art at Royal Collection Trust\, will be joining the Salisbury Branch to give a lecture on the Carl Fabergé collection.  Under her care is a collection of over 700\,000 works of art\, located in 15 royal residences which includes furniture\, sculpture\, metalwork\, ceramics\, textiles\, arms and armour and jewellery including the Crown Jewels. \nThis talk will explore how the collection was formed through six successive generations of the Royal Family from Queen Victoria to King Charles III.
