  • Workshop length: Workshops last 2.5 hours (but multiple options can be combined to create a full-day programme).
  • Delivery: ESU oracy experts.
  • Pricing: Starting from £400 (All expenses included).

With links across the curriculum, our Public Speaking workshops provide schools with a fun and practical opportunity to get all students talking in front of an audience. These workshops guide learners to becoming confident and engaging speakers through the carefully scaffolded and interactive activities.

The chart below is a rough guide on how our workshop levels match up to year groups and age-related expectations:

Beginners Public Speaking

Workshop One

This workshop is a fun introduction to oracy and speaking in public. We give children an introduction to what oracy is, why it’s important, and get them thinking about why using your voice can be a powerful thing. We use a range of interactive games and activities to get all children to deliver structurally sound ideas with confidence whilst providing you with techniques to use in your everyday teaching. This culminates in a capstone activity called PEEL your passion!

Workshop Two

This workshop develops persuasive speaking skills and guides children to write and deliver their own speech. With direct links to many areas of the English programme of study, this is an excellent way to support children to understand how speaking and using dialogic techniques in the classroom can help with their writing. It’s also great fun and encourages all children to develop their confidence and speaking ability, with immediate take-aways for schools to continue using. This culminates in the capstone activity School Prefect Election.

Workshop Three: Public Speaking Event – Coming soon!

This workshop is an excellent end-of-year capstone, or engaging way to showcase oracy skills within the school. It can also be used as a practise opportunity for public speakers who may be entering formal competitions.

  • Full day: Our full day offer begins with some warmup public speaking activities before we support students to take part in an internal Public Speaking Competition. This involves structured research support, preparation of speeches and practice. This will be followed by a performance in an ESU endorsed and Public Speaking Event where you are free to invite an audience and judging panel of your choice. No advanced preparation is needed by the students; however, we strongly recommend some prior knowledge.
  • Event only: Showcase all your hard work in an ESU endorsed and facilitated Public Speaking Event. All ESU resources and instructions will be provided in advanced, where you will also receive advice as you prepare your own candidates for this fantastic opportunity.

Intermediate Public Speaking

Workshop One

This workshop is a fun introduction to oracy and speaking in public. We give students an introduction to what oracy is, why it’s important, and get them thinking about why using your voice can be a powerful thing. We use a range of interactive games and activities to get all students using persuasive language effectively and talking with confidence in group and wider class settings. This culminates in the capstone activity Pitch it! where students prepare to sell a product in a Dragon’s Den type team experience.

Workshop Two

This workshop develops the initial persuasive speech skills introduced in Workshop One to encourage children to write and deliver their own speech in front of the class. This an excellent way to support children in their creative writing, as we carefully scaffold the making of an engaging piece full of language technique and flair. It is also a lot of fun and packed with public speaking games. This culminates in the capstone activity Minute to win it!, where students prepare and deliver individual speeches based on a topic provided by your school (or from our stock list), making it linkable to any area of your curriculum.

Advance Public Speaking

Workshop One

This workshop includes low stake and explorative activities that focus on the art of persuasion, speech structure, effective narration, and delivery style. This ends with an Orwell inspired task where students progress through rounds to win Orwell’s 101 gameshow style capstone event.

Workshop Two

Here we use the story of Martin Luther King as a case study, enabling students to learn through analysis and dissection. This unfolds into idea generation activities and the skill building of techniques needed to write a thought-provoking piece that is both engaging and clear. It culminates with students delivering a speech on a topic that they are passionate about.

The day was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on students, staff and parents, many of whom reported that their children returned home enthusiastic and animated about the day’s activities. The event was impeccably organised, with the ESU staff displaying remarkable professionalism and a genuine commitment to engaging the students, particularly those who initially lacked confidence, providing a platform for them to develop and showcase their oracy skills.
