SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Dinner & Talk by Vic Marks 'The Broadcasting Phenomena that is Test Match Special'
DESCRIPTION:What is it about a radio programme that is about cricket but which  appeals as much to those who have no interest or knowledge of the game as its aficionados? As one critic said ‘If you want the best of the English and the best English\, there is nothing to beat Test Match Special. It is just such a joy to listen to.  There is something so quintessentially English and ‘summery’ about having TMS on in the background’.  \nWith his dry wit and scholarly demeanour\, Vic Marks has been part of the TMS team for many years. Vic played cricket for Oxford\, Somerset and England before becoming a journalist and author. He writes for The Guardian and The Observer. Vic will tell us something about his years behind the microphone and why it is that an apparently niche programme holds a fascination for such a wide range of listeners. \nApplication for places at speakers’ events should be made in writing to the Dining Secretary\, Mr. Philip Maunder\, Pennies\, 46 Pound Lane\, Topsham EX30NA with a separate cheque for each event\, made payable to ‘ESU Devon and Exeter’. Cheques will not be presented for payment until the day after the event.

SUMMARY:Salisbury & Wiltshire Branch: lunch and talk 'Sailing Around the World'
DESCRIPTION:“Sailing Around the World” \nPeter Forbes \nAt the age of 8\, Peter Forbes was taught to sail by his mother in a felucca at the confluence of the Blue and the White Nile in Khartoum. This early happy experience engendered a lifelong love for sailing and for the sea and led to the nurturing of a dream over the intervening years to sail around the world. A meeting with Italian beer baron\, Rudi Peroni\, led to the acquisition of Carango\, his beautiful 54ft yacht and to the training in its management. By 2015 Peter and Vicky\, his wife\, were ready to set sail and to fulfil this dream by embarking upon their great journey. Paying specific attention to the Panama Canal\, the Galapagos and Cape Town\, the talk will cover the interesting experiences and exciting challenges that they faced during this long voyage. \nLunch & Talk £18; Talk only £10 – Talk FREE for first-time visitors.  Advance booking essential.

SUMMARY:Ouse Valley Branch: Lunch & Talk on 'Ethics & Empire' by Professor Nigel Biggar
DESCRIPTION:Professor Niger Biggar\, Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology\, University of Oxford will deliver a talk on Ethics and Empire. \nFrom the 18th century until the years after the Second World War  Britain ruled an enormous  empire. Attitudes to this have changed over the last 100 years\, moving from popular pride to doubt and guilt. Our speaker is leading a 5 year project attempting to achieve a balanced assessment of empire. Is such an appraisal possible? The project has proved to be controversial\, and has raised issues of free speech and the discussion of “incorrect” views. How should we regard the British Empire and\, indeed\, other empires? Can it and they be defended? \nLuncheon meetings start at 12.30pm for 1.00pm lunch\, followed by the talk.

SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Dinner & Talk 'Celestial Images: Saints and Sinners’ by Professor Michael Mendillo
DESCRIPTION:Devon & Exeter branch invite you to a dinner & talk on the subject of ‘Celestial Images: Saints and Sinners\, Intersections of Astronomy\, Art and Religion’ by Professor Michael Mendillo from Boston University\, Massachusetts. \nCelestial imagery of constellations spans human history\, from cave art to modern digital representations of the sky.  Images of astronomy and the art of religion merged in the 17th Century in an audacious re-branding of the sky that replaced the pagan villains of antiquity with biblical heroes. This richly illustrated talk will tell that story. It is an extraordinary privilege to welcome Michael Mendillo to the ESU. He is professor of Astronomy at Boston University and is recognised as being one of the world leaders in his field. He has advised many organisations including NASA and lectured worldwide. He has been described by one of his students as ‘one of the cutest\, funniest\, and sweetest profs around’.

SUMMARY:Oxfordshire Branch: Visit to Broughton Castle
DESCRIPTION:Oxfordshire Branch private tour of Broughton Castle. \nBroughton Castle is a moated and fortified manor house \, the core of the house was built in 1306 and the gatehouse in the early fifteenth century\, but most of what you see today dates from the 1550’s. It was a centre of opposition to Charles I and was besieged and damaged after the Battle of Edgehill in 1642. Broughton Castle is home to the 21st Lord and Lady Saye & Sele\, whose family name is Fiennes. \nThe ownership of the Castle has remained in the same family since 1447. Sir Thomas Wykeham was granted a “license to crenellate” in 1406 and these fortifications – gatehouse\, moat and the battlements of the curtain wall – are the result. Sir Thomas had inherited Broughton Castle from his great uncle William of Wykeham\, the founder of New College\, Oxford and Winchester College who bought Broughton Castle in 1377. Their descendants still live in the Castle. \nEvent information: \nWe will meet in the car park at about 1.50. \nBroughton Castle is 2.5 miles from the centre of Banbury\, 3 miles from Junction 11 of the M40. \nAt Banbury Cross take the B4035 west signposted to Shipston on Stour then\, after about two miles\, turn right in Broughton village at the crossroads by the Saye & Sele Arms pub. At the bottom of the hill turn left into the drive.  The car park is on your left before the Church. \nPlease note that all public toilets are in the main building in the car park – there are none available at the Castle. \nThe Saye & Sele Arms pub in the village serves lunches. \nwww.sayeandselearms.co.uk \n  \n

SUMMARY:Brighton Branch: Talk 'Walter Gibraltar: From Sussex to the Bishop’s Palace\, Malta'
DESCRIPTION:Walter Trower (1804 – 1877) married Elizabeth Goring of Winston House in Sussex and became Bishop of Gibraltar. From his base in Malta he travelled to Greece\, Turkey\, Italy\, France and Spain. The British Empire was approaching its apogee and the international situation was tense\, so politics and concerns about war took up almost as much time as religious affairs. Dr Janet Pennington taught local history and palaeography for the Centre for Continuing Education at Sussex University and was archivist at Lancing College.

SUMMARY:ESU Performing Shakespeare Grand Final 2019
DESCRIPTION:Description\nJoin us on Friday\, 21st June 2019 to see young people aged 11-14 from across England and Wales give a performance of their chosen speech from one of Shakespeare’s plays. \nThe Performing Shakespeare Competition is designed to allow Key Stage 3 pupils the opportunity to experience Shakespeare’s plays as they were intended – on the stage. Using theatre and performance skills to engage with the texts\, our performers bring to life some of the world’s most famous speeches in their own unique interpretations. This is definitely an event not to be missed! \nThe event will be held at Dartmouth House\, the ESU’s International Headquarters in Mayfair. Guests who are not associated with our participating schools are welcome to arrive from 1:30pm for a prompt 2pm start. The event will have finished by 5pm. \nWe are pleased to be able to offer tickets for this event free of charge and there will be an opportunity to make an donation to our charitable activities on the day. There will be tea and coffees served in the afternoon\, but lunch is not included. Please note we have finalists with severe nut allergies so please do not bring any nuts or confectionary with nuts.
