SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: ‘Syria: The Making of a Refuge State’ Professor Dawn Chatty\, FBA PhD
DESCRIPTION:Dawn Chatty is an American social anthropologist and academic\, who specialises in the Middle East\, nomadic pastoral tribes\, and refugees. From 2010 to 2015\, she was Emeritus Professor of Anthropology and Forced Migration at the University of Oxford. Her book ‘Syria: The Making and Unmaking of a Refuge State’ was published by Hurst & Co in 2018. \nThe mass influx of peoples into Syria over the last 150 years\, including Circassians\, Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews\, Armenian\, Albanians\, Kosovars\, created a modern nation of great cultural hybridity. Until recently this was the source of its openness to contemporary waves of forced migrants including Palestinians\, Lebanese\, and Iraqis. Now\, with the tables turned\, nearly 50 per cent of Syrians have sought refuge and sanctuary among its neighbouring states. This lecture examines the history of Syria – Bilad-al-Sham – in the late Ottoman Empire and since World War One as it welcomed refugees and other uprooted peoples from across the region. \nCheques payable to ‘English-Speaking Union’ should be sent at least 7 days in advance to: \nMrs Louise Jeffreys\, Greenrock\, Francis Way\, Salisbury SP2 8EF \nFurther details: esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org; 01722 336118

SUMMARY:London Branch: Visit to the Garrick Club
DESCRIPTION:Situated in the heart of the West End and Theatreland\, the Garrick Club was founded in 1831 as a private members’ club by a group of literary gentlemen under the patronage of the King’s brother\, the egalitarian Duke of Sussex. They announced that the club would be a place where ‘actors and men of refinement and education might meet on equal terms.’ \nThe first members were a sophisticated and cosmopolitan group\, which included famous Dickens and Thackeray. Today the club has around 1\,300 members including many of the most distinguished actors and men of letters in England. \nThe club possesses an important theatrical library that includes many manuscripts and documents\, a valuable collection of play-texts and tens of thousands of playbills and theatre programmes. However\, the greatest treasure of the Garrick Club is the collection of theatrical paintings and drawings\, much the largest and most comprehensive in existence.

SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Lunch & Talk on Music of the Holocaust by Professor Shirli Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary range of musical activities\, both forced and voluntary\, took place in the Nazi ghettos and camps\, from the earliest internment centres established in 1933 until the liberation in 1945. The musical works these prisoners created are extraordinary documents from the time: fragments recovered from the rubble of war and genocide; monuments to the lives that were destroyed. In this talk\, which will feature many film extracts\, Shirli Gilbert\, professor of Modern History at Southampton University with a specialism in Jewish History and particularly the Holocaust\, will highlight original music from this period\, including some rare post-war recordings. The songs offer rich insight into victims’ experiences\, conveying the uncertain and shifting perspectives of prisoner communities as they made sense of lived reality. \nApplication for places at speakers’ events should be made in writing to the Dining Secretary\, Mr. Philip Maunder\, Pennies\, 46 Pound Lane\, Topsham EX30NA with a separate cheque for each event\, made payable to ‘ESU Devon and Exeter’. Cheques will not be presented for payment until the day after the event.
