SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Annual Black Tie Dinner - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:We regret that this event has been cancelled. \nDevon & Exeter Branch’s annual Black Tie Dinner with a talk autobiographical talk from Billy “Scratch” Hitchen. \nAt the end of the Easter holidays in 1963\, Billy ‘Scratch’  Hitchen\, instead of returning to school in Salcombe\, having already been expelled by his mother\, who was the head of East Portlemouth School\, chose to run away to sea: he was just 14. Before the age of 19\, he had sailed round the world 5 times. From Cape Horn to the Indian and Pacific  Oceans; from the southerly tip of New Zealand to the North Atlantic\, from oil drilling in Argentina to pipeline construction in West Africa\, Scratch’s early life was one of challenge and freedom. \nIn 1973\, Scratch returned to Salcombe and spent the next three decades commercial fishing the coasts of the UK and other marine ventures. \nScratch will share some of his remarkable  story; of his rise from illiterate and innumerate cabin boy to skipper of the tug to steer the last of the great Cunard liners into the heart of Manhattan; from competitive sailor to commercial fisherman and proprietor of a marina. \nApplication for places at speakers’ events should be made in writing to the Dining Secretary\, Mr. Philip Maunder\, Pennies\, 46 Pound Lane\, Topsham EX30NA with a separate cheque for each event\, made payable to ‘ESU Devon and Exeter’. Cheques will not be presented for payment until the day after the event.

SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: ‘Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA’ Isobel Williams
DESCRIPTION:Isobel is a retired Consultant in Respiratory Medicine.  While qualifying at St George’s Hospital\, University of London\, where Edward Wilson\, Robert Scott’s friend and confidant\, had trained some sixty-five years previously\, she saw many of Wilson’s iconic pictures of Antarctica and became fascinated by the continent and the explorers of the early 1900s. She has written several books about them and speaks regularly on Antarctic subjects and Antarctic heroes. \nEdward Wilson and his wife made their home in Bushey\, Hertfordshire.  When Isobel visited Bushey Museum to learn more about them\, she found the museum was more interested in their celebrity von Herkomer\, who had lived in the town for forty years. \nHerkomer was a Bavarian who became one of the most popular artists in the Victorian period in England. He painted many interesting portraits of the good and the great in England and in Boston U.S.A. He was so much accepted that he was invited to paint Queen Victoria on her death bed\, an unusual honour for a commoner and\, though a nationalized British citizen\, a German. His fall from popularity was dramatic; he died at the onset of the First World War and by the end of that war\, anti-German sentiment was rife in Britain. Also\, by this time\, appreciation of styles of painting had changed greatly with the advent of Modernism that was contrasted unfavourably with his naturalism. His work is gradually being revalued\, however. \nCheques payable to ‘English-Speaking Union’ should be sent at least 7 days in advance to: \nMrs Louise Jeffreys\, Greenrock\, Francis Way\, Salisbury SP2 8EF \nFurther details: esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org; 01722 336118

SUMMARY:Literary event: In conversation with author Ingrid Persaud ONLINE EVENT
DESCRIPTION:The English-Speaking Union welcomes you to an evening in conversation with Ingrid Persaud\, who will be talking about her new novel Love after Love. \n \nBorn in Trinidad\, Ingrid Persaud won the Commonwealth Short Story Prize in 2017 and the BBC Short Story Award in 2018. She read law at the LSE and was a legal academic before taking degrees in fine art at Goldsmiths College and Central Saint Martins. Her writing has appeared in Granta\, Prospect and Pree magazines. Ingrid lives in London and Barbados. \nAbout Love after love: \nMeet the Ramdin-Chetan family: forged through loneliness\, broken by secrets\, saved by love. Irrepressible Betty Ramdin\, her shy son Solo and their marvellous lodger\, Mr Chetan\, form an unconventional household\, happy in their differences\, as they build a home together. Home: the place where your navel string is buried\, keeping these three safe from an increasingly dangerous world. Happy and loving they are\, until the night when a glass of rum\, a heart to heart and a terrible truth explodes the family unit\, driving them apart. Brave and brilliant\, steeped in affection\, Love After Love is a novel full of heart which asks us to consider what happens at the very brink of human forgiveness\, and offers hope to anyone who has loved and lost and has yet to find their way back. \n‘Love After Love took me by surprise. I loved the kindness of Mr Chetan\, the vulnerability of Solo and the force that is Betty. Tender\, glorious\, bold\, and yes\, messy too with a voice that has a vibrancy of its own. I was gripped by the sheer punch of the writing.’ Rachel Joyce \nThe in conversation with Ingrid Persaud will start at 7.30pm sharp. \nProceeds from this event will support the English-Speaking Union’s work in Guildford\, helping young people to communicate and thrive. \nbook your ticket here

SUMMARY:London Region: Book talk 'Churchill’s Abandoned Prisoners' by author Rupert Wieloch
DESCRIPTION:The English-Speaking Union London branch invites you to a Talk by Rupert Wieloch on his latest book\, Churchill’s Abandoned Prisoners. \nDrinks will be served from 6.30pm\, the talk will start at 7.00pm sharp \nOne hundred years ago a group of fifteen British soldiers serving with the British Mission to Siberia were captured by the Red Army on Russian Christmas Eve (6th January). They were held in a lice-infested room at Krasnoyarsk for three months\, whilst Prime Minister Lloyd George’s representative signed a prisoner exchange treaty with Lenin’s envoy in Copenhagen. One of the prisoners was a young Captain Brian Horrocks (played by Edward Fox in the film A Bridge Too Far)\, who succumbed to epidemic typhus\, but was saved by his best friend who nursed him through the illness. In March\, the prisoners were escorted to Irkutsk where a British train arrived to pick them up\, but the Bolshevik authorities only allowed the women and children to leave and sent the sespondent soldiers 3\,500 miles to hateful prisons in Moscow. \nIn his talk at the English-Speaking Union\, Rupert Wieloch will describe how the soldiers maintained moral and coped with their fearsome ordeal and explain what the War Secretary\, Winston Churchill\, did to secure their protracted release. Rupert was educated at Winston Churchill’s alma mater and completed a Fellowship in International Relations at Pembroke College\, Cambridge during a 35 year career in the British Army. His extensive research includes a treasure-trove of unpublished documents and archives from Philadelphia\, London\, St Petersburg and Oxford. \nAfter the talk Rupert available to sign copies of his latest book\, which will be on sale. \nBookings can be made through Eventbrite: https://esuchurchilltalk.eventbrite.co.uk or by sending a cheque to Events\, English-Speaking Union\, 37 Charles Street\, London W1J 5ED.

SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: ‘The Mary Rose’ Edward Towne MA MSt PGCE
DESCRIPTION:Edward Towne graduated in European Studies from the University of East Anglia and later achieved a PGCE from Cambridge\, an MA in Early Modern English History from the University of London and a MSt in Twentieth Century British History from the University of Oxford. His professional career was spent teaching History in state and independent Secondary Schools. Currently\, Edward lectures to adults in a variety of organisations and acts as a reviewer and tour leader on historical topics. \nThe “Mary Rose”\, the pride of Henry VIII’s fleet\, was launched in 1512 and saw service against the French in the 1520’s.  In 1545\, the Mary Rose put out from Portsmouth Harbour to engage a French invasion fleet but sank with heavy loss of life as Henry VIII and his courtiers watched.  The reason for the sinking is hotly debated:  accurate French cannon fire\, a freak wave\, poor seamanship and overmanning are all suggested. \nAfter several unsuccessful attempts at salvage the remains of the hull were raised in 1982 and are now displayed at Portsmouth Dockyard.
