SUMMARY:Literary event: Hugo Vickers talk on 'The Life of Gladys Deacon\, Duchess of Marlborough'
DESCRIPTION:The English-Speaking Union invites you to a reception at Dartmouth House followed by a talk by Hugo Vickers who will discuss his book The Sphinx: The Life of Gladys Deacon – Duchess of Marlborough \nAbout the book: \nOne of the most beautiful and brilliant women of her time\, Gladys Deacon dazzled and puzzled the glittering social circles in which she moved. Born in Paris to American parents in 1881\, Gladys emerged from a traumatic childhood – her father having shot her mother’s lover dead when Gladys was only eleven – to captivate and inspire some of the greatest literary and artistic names of the Belle Epoque. Marcel Proust wrote of her\, ‘I never saw a girl with such beauty\, such magnificent intelligence\, such goodness and charm.’ \nGladys was to spend her last years in the psycho-geriatric ward of a mental hospital\, where she was discovered by a young Hugo Vickers. Forty years on\, Vickers has now completely rewritten and revised his original biography\, updating it with previously unavailable material and drawing on his own personal research all over Europe and America. He once asked Gladys\, ‘Where is Gladys Deacon?’ She answered him slowly\, ‘Gladys Deacon? . . . She never existed.’ \nThe Sphinx is a fascinating portrait of this elusive but brilliant woman who was at the centre of a now bygone era of wealth and privilege – and a tribute to one of the brightest stars of her age. \nAbout the author: \nHugo Vickers is a writer\, lecturer and broadcaster\, and an acknowledged expert on the British Royal Family. He has written biographies of the Queen Mother\, Gladys\, Duchess of Marlborough\, Cecil Beaton\, Vivien Leigh\, Princess Andrew of Greece and the Duchess of Windsor. The Sphinx has been a forty-year journey for him since his first meeting with Gladys Deacon in 1975. \nReception from 6.30pm the talk will start at 7.00pm sharp

SUMMARY:ESU-Churchill Public Speaking Competition 60th Grand Final
DESCRIPTION:Come and see our work in action as one of the oldest continuously running public speaking competitions in the UK reaches its final stage. \nThe Grand Final is the culmination of five months of Public Speaking competitions throughout England and Wales. The young speakers have got through over 80 local branch heats and finals\, and eight regional finals to make it to the Grand Final. \nThe competition involves two teams of three (speaker\, chair and questioner) competing against each other in front of an audience of supporters. The speaker talks on a pre-agreed topic\, the questioner challenges the speaker on points within their speech and the chair manages the proceedings and questions from the audience. The competition is designed for Key Stage 3 & 4 students\, with around 400 teams entering each year. Students have proved the power of their speech writing and presenting skills\, have had their knowledge of topical issues tested\, and demonstrated the ability to think on their feet. \nThe passion and talent of these young speakers are always a highlight of our educational calendar – with a range of topics under discussion\, this is bound to be an event to make you think. This National Final is a showcase for the very best of Speaking\, Chairing and Questioning in the UK.

SUMMARY:Devon & Exeter Branch: Annual Black Tie Dinner - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:We regret that this event has been cancelled. \nDevon & Exeter Branch’s annual Black Tie Dinner with a talk autobiographical talk from Billy “Scratch” Hitchen. \nAt the end of the Easter holidays in 1963\, Billy ‘Scratch’  Hitchen\, instead of returning to school in Salcombe\, having already been expelled by his mother\, who was the head of East Portlemouth School\, chose to run away to sea: he was just 14. Before the age of 19\, he had sailed round the world 5 times. From Cape Horn to the Indian and Pacific  Oceans; from the southerly tip of New Zealand to the North Atlantic\, from oil drilling in Argentina to pipeline construction in West Africa\, Scratch’s early life was one of challenge and freedom. \nIn 1973\, Scratch returned to Salcombe and spent the next three decades commercial fishing the coasts of the UK and other marine ventures. \nScratch will share some of his remarkable  story; of his rise from illiterate and innumerate cabin boy to skipper of the tug to steer the last of the great Cunard liners into the heart of Manhattan; from competitive sailor to commercial fisherman and proprietor of a marina. \nApplication for places at speakers’ events should be made in writing to the Dining Secretary\, Mr. Philip Maunder\, Pennies\, 46 Pound Lane\, Topsham EX30NA with a separate cheque for each event\, made payable to ‘ESU Devon and Exeter’. Cheques will not be presented for payment until the day after the event.

SUMMARY:Salisbury Branch: ‘Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA’ Isobel Williams
DESCRIPTION:Isobel is a retired Consultant in Respiratory Medicine.  While qualifying at St George’s Hospital\, University of London\, where Edward Wilson\, Robert Scott’s friend and confidant\, had trained some sixty-five years previously\, she saw many of Wilson’s iconic pictures of Antarctica and became fascinated by the continent and the explorers of the early 1900s. She has written several books about them and speaks regularly on Antarctic subjects and Antarctic heroes. \nEdward Wilson and his wife made their home in Bushey\, Hertfordshire.  When Isobel visited Bushey Museum to learn more about them\, she found the museum was more interested in their celebrity von Herkomer\, who had lived in the town for forty years. \nHerkomer was a Bavarian who became one of the most popular artists in the Victorian period in England. He painted many interesting portraits of the good and the great in England and in Boston U.S.A. He was so much accepted that he was invited to paint Queen Victoria on her death bed\, an unusual honour for a commoner and\, though a nationalized British citizen\, a German. His fall from popularity was dramatic; he died at the onset of the First World War and by the end of that war\, anti-German sentiment was rife in Britain. Also\, by this time\, appreciation of styles of painting had changed greatly with the advent of Modernism that was contrasted unfavourably with his naturalism. His work is gradually being revalued\, however. \nCheques payable to ‘English-Speaking Union’ should be sent at least 7 days in advance to: \nMrs Louise Jeffreys\, Greenrock\, Francis Way\, Salisbury SP2 8EF \nFurther details: esusalisbury-eventssec@esu.org; 01722 336118
