SUMMARY:The Cold War & Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Former British Ambassador to Russia\, Sir Roderic Lyne joins the English-Speaking Union Lincolnshire Committee’s John Raine in conversation to talk about his varied and distinguished career and insight into current relationships at 6pm on Thursday\, 13 May 2021 on Zoom. The event is free – please email Kelly Bevers for the access link at kelly.bevers@carlbom.co.uk. \nSon of senior RAF officer and Spitfire pilot Air Vice Marshal Michael Lyne (and point of interest for Lincolnshire locals: Commandant of RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire in 1963)\, Sir Roderic began to flourish only after scraping into Leeds University where he fast became a stellar student. Joining the Foreign Office\, the refreshingly down-to-earth young diplomat went from strength to strength and held roles including Private Secretary to Prime Minister John Major and Assistant Private Secretary to Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington. He was lured out of retirement from the public service front line to be part of the Chilcot Inquiry’s five-strong panel. \nJohn Raine CMG OBE served in the UK Diplomatic Service for over 30 years until his retirement in 2017 and is currently Senior Adviser at the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London where he specialises in the Middle East.

SUMMARY:Hertfordshire Branch Zoom talk: The Mary Rose
DESCRIPTION:The ESU Hertfordshire Branch is delighted to invite all ESU members to join them on Zoom talk about the Mary Rose given by Edward Towne. \nEdward Towne graduated in European Studies from the University of East Anglia and later achieved a PGCE from Cambridge\, an MA in Early Modern English History from the University of London and a MSt in Twentieth Century British History from the University of Oxford. His professional career was spent teaching History in state and independent Secondary Schools. Currently\, Edward lectures to adults in a variety of organisations and acts as a reviewer and tour leader on historical topics. \nThe “Mary Rose”\, the pride of Henry VIII’s fleet\, was launched in 1512 and saw service against the French in the 1520’s.  In 1545\, the Mary Rose put out from Portsmouth Harbour to engage a French invasion fleet but sank with heavy loss of life as Henry VIII and his courtiers watched.  The reason for the sinking is hotly debated:  accurate French cannon fire\, a freak wave\, poor seamanship and overmanning are all suggested. \nAfter several unsuccessful attempts at salvage the remains of the hull were raised in 1982 and are now displayed at Portsmouth Dockyard. \nPlease register here to reserve your space.

They are stories about trade\, transport\, communities\, engineering and design. \nIn this talk\, Jeff Lucas examines the various factors that resulted\, over the course of a thousand years\, in Bristol having so many bridges and recounts a selection of their sometimes dramatic histories. \nAll 45 bridges have been linked together into a long-distance walk which takes you from the inner city to the sea and back again\, crossing each bridge only once. \nJeff explains how such a walk is a solution to an old mathematical puzzle\, solved for Bristol by mathematician Thilo Gross\, formerly of Bristol University. \nHis talk is copiously illustrated with archive photographs and drawings\, and his own revealing photography. \nReserve your ticket here: https://bristol_in_45_bridges.eventbrite.co.uk

SUMMARY:Zoom event: Enlightenment Sea Monsters: Language\, Information and Truth
DESCRIPTION:Hertfordshire ESU invites you to join Professor Raven\, for a short zoom lecture followed by a group discussion. \nIn this informal talk\, Professor Raven shares his new historical work in progress – a ‘book biography’ that examines the global influence of a now-forgotten eighteenth-century best-seller. It is a story of an intellectual Scandinavian bishop\, determined to explore\, explain and write about the natural world\, but\, persuaded by the truth of sightings and myths about sea monsters\, became embroiled in debates about fakery that consumed readers and influenced writers around the world. Current parallels might be entertained…. \nReserve your ticket here: \nhttps://esuhertfordshire.eventbrite.co.uk

SUMMARY:ONLINE EVENT: WHY DO WE DEBATE?
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the purpose of debate in civil society. \nThe discussion\, chaired by Prof. James Raven\, Chair of the ESU\, will be led by our panel: Dr Katie East\, Lecturer in the History of Radical Ideas at Newcastle University; Bilal Mahmood\, ESU Governor\, senior legal consultant for China Construction Bank\, and internationally acknowledged mentor to generations of young debaters; and Christopher L. Peterson\, the Democratic candidate for the Governorship of Utah and John J. Flynn Endowed Professor of Law at the University of Utah. Fittingly\, Prof. Peterson and his Republican counterpart\, Spencer Cox\, recently issued a joint TV advertisement calling for ‘Civility in debate’ especially to set an example to the young in the US. \nProfessor James Raven\, Chair of the English-Speaking Union\, says: ‘At its best\, debate should be a collaborative\, solution-focused process and yet\, in these polarised times\, public debate so often quickly descends into personal attacks or a refusal to engage. This event will examine the purpose of debate and what its rules of engagement should be. \n‘We look forward to a variety of illuminating perspectives\, from Dr East who inspires her students with positive models of debate; to Mr Mahmood who is passionate about debate as a tool of empowerment; and Professor Peterson\, who\, fresh from the campaign trail in the US\, can speak first-hand about public debate in action.’ \nThe event will be hosted on Zoom\, and there will be time for questions afterwards. \nPlease follow this link to reserve your ticket: https://why_do_we_debate.eventbrite.co.uk

SUMMARY:Lincolnshire Branch: AN EVENING ONLINE WITH THE AIR TRANSPORT AUXILIARY
DESCRIPTION:Lincolnshire Branch of the ESU commemorates The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) on the 75th anniversary of its disbandment. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event \n\n\nThe 30th November 2020 is the 75th anniversary of the disbandment of this remarkable band of men and women. A commemoration at White Waltham would have been a fitting occasion to pay tribute to them; with the pandemic this has not been feasible\, but it is the privilege of the Lincolnshire Branch of the English Speaking Union to present a virtual commemoration of that day\, with a talk about its achievements and stories about its members. \nThe Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) was a British civilian organisation\, set up during the Second World War and headquartered at White Waltham Airfield\, that notably ferried new\, repaired and damaged military aircraft of all types from factories and maintenance units to active service squadrons and airfields. Famously\,1 in 8 of its pilots were women – a total of 166 served and played a crucial part in delivering more than 309\,000 aircraft of 147 types to the front line. \nATA’s aircrew came from Britain and 25 other countries\, with the women hailing from Argentina\, Australia\, Canada\, Chile\, Germany\, New Zealand\, South Africa\, the United States\, the Netherlands and Poland. Of ATA’s 173 casualties\, seventeen women lost their lives in the air\, including the British pioneer aviator Amy Johnson and commercial pilot Joy Davison – ATA’s first female loss. Two of the women pilots received the Commodore’s Commendation\, and six received an MBE\, including the founder of the women’s section\, Pauline Gower. A notable American member of the ATA was legendary aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran who returned to the United States and started a similar all female organization. \nLord Beaverbrook\, the World War II Minister of Aircraft Production\, shortly before the ATA was disbanded in 1945\, said: \nWithout the ATA the days and nights of the Battle of Britain would have been conducted under conditions quite different from the actual events. They carried out the delivery of aircraft from the factories to the RAF\, thus relieving countless numbers of RAF pilots for duty in the battle.” \nOur Speakers are: Minnie Churchill\, the Honorary Commodore of the ATA Association\, will give a brief introduction with some reflections about her father. She is the daughter of ATA’s founder\, Sir Gerard d’Erlanger; fittingly she follows in her father’s footsteps as he held the rank of Commodore when he commanded the ATA throughout its existence. \nJohn Webster\, Secretary of the ATA Association\, has carried out extensive research of the ATA’s history\, including interviews with those who served in it. His talk will be both commemorative and well illustrated to suit the occasion. \nReserve your ticket here: https://esu_ata_talk.eventbrite.co.uk

SUMMARY:ESU Bristol Branch zoom event: 'Bristol on the Box'
DESCRIPTION:Join Bristol branch of the English-Speaking Union for an evening with film producer David Parker\, to explore stories from the city’s past. \nDid you know that Bristol once had a castle the size of ten football pitches\, or that the plan of old medieval centre is similar to that of Moscow\, or that Bristol was lost twice in the English Civil War. These are some of the stories from the past in the city and about which David Parker has made programmes for television. David has been making films for TV for the last 30 years\, a number of which have been shot in Bristol. In this illustrated talk he will show clips from some of these films to shed light on some of the less well known elements of the history of the city. \nReserve your ticket here: https://bristolonthebox.eventbrite.co.uk

SUMMARY:ESU Evelyn Wrench Lecture with Baroness Hale of Richmond
DESCRIPTION:ESU Evelyn Wrench Lecture: Baroness Hale of Richmond ‘Getting the Message Across: Communication and Transparency in the UK’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, 10 November at 7.30pm\, Baroness Hale of Richmond will give the English-Speaking Union Evelyn Wrench Lecture 2020\, on the subject of ‘Getting the Message Across: Communication and Transparency in the UK Supreme Court’ the event\, will take place over Zoom. \nLady Hale was the first female Law Lord in the UK Parliament\, the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court\, and its first female president. A staunch believer in equality (her motto is Omnia Feminae Aequissimae – ‘women are equal to everything’)\, she has done much to promote the rights of women\, children\, and those with reduced mental capacity in a legal career stretching back to 1966 when she began teaching law at Manchester University. Last September\, she became a household name when she delivered the Supreme Court’s verdict that the Prime Minister’s decision to prorogue parliament was unlawful. She has more recently made waves with her statements that\, in regard to the covid emergency laws parliament ‘surrendered control to the government at a crucial time’. \nThis lecture is part of the English-Speaking Union’s programme of events\, celebrating global understanding through dialogue and will support our vital charitable mission of giving young people the speaking and listening skills and cultural understanding they need to thrive. \nReserve your ticket here: https://wrenchlecture2020.eventbrite.co.uk

SUMMARY:Online event: Are some born to be better and more civil public speakers?
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the formation of belief and how genes\, traits and experiences shape our views\, Dr Hannah Critchlow\, broadcaster and neuroscientist at Cambridge University\, examines the concept of free will and asks whether we can ever really change anyone else’s – or even our own – minds. She will be joined by Heidi Allen\, Former MP for South Cambridgeshire\, and Dr Paul Beresford-Hill\, Chairman of the ESU of the US. \nEvent summary:\n‘Are some born to be better and more civil public speakers?’ Dr Hannah Critchlow\, broadcaster and neuroscientist at Cambridge University\, examines the concept of free will and asks whether we can ever really change anyone else’s – or even our own – minds. \nHannah explores the formation of belief and how genes\, traits and experiences shape our views. Numerous scholars are now investigating how the different profiles of brains are associated with different ideologies. It is claimed that the brains of those with very conservative views have a much larger volume and a much more sensitive amygdala – the area of the brain that is involved in perceptions of fear. Those of more liberal inclination seem to have a greater weighting on the region of the brain that is engaged with future planning and more collaborative endeavour. Liberals look to the future and seem less sensitive to immediate threats. This leads to questions about how neuroscience might affect how we change our minds and go about winning an argument. The study has\, therefore\, key implications for those working on questions of civility\, persuasiveness\, and divisiveness in public discourse\, suggesting that the way in which we build up perceptions of the world strengthens the way in which we ignore contrary views and evidence. \nA discussion will follow led by our distinguished panel guests Heidi Allen\, Former MP for South Cambridgeshire\, and Dr Paul Beresford-Hill\, Chairman of the ESU of the US. \nChaired by ESU Chair\, Professor James Raven\, the debate and Q&A session will take place via Zoom on Wednesday\, 23 September at 7.30pm (BST). \nReserve your ticket here: https://civilpublicspeakers.eventbrite.co.uk \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:ONLINE EVENT: THE INCIVILITY PROBLEM - HAS SOCIAL MEDIA MADE CONVERSATION LESS CIVIL?
DESCRIPTION:Most of us think that new media have made public discussion and pronouncements less civil. Is this true and if so what are the consequences for public debate and communication?  Do please join us online on Thursday\, 23 July at 7.30pm BST for the first in a series of events in which a distinguished panel will share their thoughts on the issues at hand. \nThe event will open with a short presentation from Texas by Prof. Emily Sydnor\, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Southwestern University and author of Disrespectful Democracy: The Psychology of Political Incivility. \nShe writes: ‘research demonstrates that negativity and rudeness in politics have been increasing for decades. But how does this tide of impolite-to-outrageous language affect our reactions to media coverage and our political behaviour?’ She argues that ‘citizens now need to be able to tolerate or even welcome incivility in the public sphere in order to participate in the democratic process. Yet individuals who are turned off by incivility are not brought back in by civil presentation of issues.’ \nThe discussion\, chaired by Prof. James Raven\, Chair of the ESU\, will be led by our panel: Teresa Bejan\, Associate Professor of Political Theory in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford and author of Mere Civility: Disagreement and the Limits of Toleration\, and David Howarth\, Professor of Law and Public Policy at the University of Cambridge\, former MP for Cambridge\, and former Electoral Commissioner. \nA donation of £10 per person is suggested. \nReserve your space here:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-incivility-problem-tickets-113559678054
