DESCRIPTION:Tim Coles\, Professor of Social History at the University of Bristol\, will talk about his book ‘About Britain – a journey of 70 years and 1\,345 miles’. \nIn 1951\, the Festival of Britain commissioned a series of short guides they dubbed ‘handbooks for the explorer’. Their aim was to encourage readers to venture out beyond the capital and on to ‘the roads and the by-roads’ to see Britain as a ‘living country’. Yet these thirteen guides did more than celebrate the rural splendour of this ‘island nation’: they also made much of Britain’s industrial power and mid-century ambition – her thirst for new technologies\, pride in manufacturing and passion for exciting new ways to travel by road\, air and sea. \nArmed with these About Britain guides\, historian Tim Cole takes to the roads to find out what has changed and what has remained the same over the 70 years since they were first published. DESCRIPTION:Join the English-Speaking Union for an online event with Jatinder Verma MBE \nBorn in Tanzania and raised in Kenya until the age of 14\, Jatinder Verma MBE has been a formidable figure in the British arts world for over 40 years and is regarded as one of the leading authorities in the country on diversity issues. In 1976 he was the co-founder of Tara Arts\, the British Asian theatre company which now has its own Tara Theatre in London. In 1989 he was the first non-white director of a play at the National Theatre. He dramatised the epic Indian text The Mahabharata for the BBC and a few days after he speaks for the ESU he will direct the same work in the West End. DESCRIPTION:The ESU is holding a Zoom forum to bring together young members and volunteers from around the country to discuss not only what they can do to further the work of the English-Speaking Union supporting the ESU’s oracy work with schools\, but also to consider how the ESU can create a engaging and fulfilling membership experience for those under 30. \nThe forum will feature a discussion between six young members and volunteers\, before it is opened up to the floor for questions and discussion. \nOur panellists will be: \nChair – Louis Preston \nLouis now works in TV/film industry.  He is an alumnus of the ESU-Churchill Public Speaking Competition.  Louis was an intern at our Dartmouth House HQ and an ESU Oracy Trainer and Mentor (OTM) who delivered Discover Debating.  He now judges the ESU-Churchill PSC and the ESU Performing Shakespeare Competition\, as well as supporting the ESU as a Zoom Host. \nJennifer Grace \nJen works as a Drama and Arts Facilitator and studying for a Master’s in Applied Theatre at The Royal School of Speech and Drama.  She is an alumna of the ESU-Churchill Public Speaking Competition.  Jen is now a member of the Guildford Branch committee and organises branch events; she also judges the ESU-Churchill PSC and the ESU Performing Shakespeare Competition\, as well as supporting the ESU as a Zoom Host. \nFatima Pamsm-Conteh  \nFatima is studying at the University of Birmingham.  She is a three year alumna of the ESU’s Debate Academy. Fatima now judges the ESU-Churchill PSC and introduced Baroness Hale at a recent ESU Zoom event. \nSerena Parek  \nSerena works in London in public affairs and political communications.  She is an alumna of the London Debate Challenge\, as well as the ESU-Churchill Public Speaking and ESU Schools’ Mace Debating competitions.  Serena has been an ESU Oracy Trainer and Mentor (OTM) and now judges the ESU-Churchill PSC. \nJames Thompson \nJames is studying at De Montfort University\, Leicester. The event is free – please email Kelly Bevers for the access link at kelly.bevers@carlbom.co.uk. \nSon of senior RAF officer and Spitfire pilot Air Vice Marshal Michael Lyne (and point of interest for Lincolnshire locals: Commandant of RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire in 1963)\, Sir Roderic began to flourish only after scraping into Leeds University where he fast became a stellar student. Joining the Foreign Office\, the refreshingly down-to-earth young diplomat went from strength to strength and held roles including Private Secretary to Prime Minister John Major and Assistant Private Secretary to Foreign Secretary Lord Carrington. He was lured out of retirement from the public service front line to be part of the Chilcot Inquiry’s five-strong panel. \nJohn Raine CMG OBE served in the UK Diplomatic Service for over 30 years until his retirement in 2017 and is currently Senior Adviser at the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London where he specialises in the Middle East.

SUMMARY:Hertfordshire Branch Zoom talk: The Mary Rose
DESCRIPTION:The ESU Hertfordshire Branch is delighted to invite all ESU members to join them on Zoom talk about the Mary Rose given by Edward Towne. \nEdward Towne graduated in European Studies from the University of East Anglia and later achieved a PGCE from Cambridge\, an MA in Early Modern English History from the University of London and a MSt in Twentieth Century British History from the University of Oxford. His professional career was spent teaching History in state and independent Secondary Schools. Currently\, Edward lectures to adults in a variety of organisations and acts as a reviewer and tour leader on historical topics. \nThe “Mary Rose”\, the pride of Henry VIII’s fleet\, was launched in 1512 and saw service against the French in the 1520’s.  In 1545\, the Mary Rose put out from Portsmouth Harbour to engage a French invasion fleet but sank with heavy loss of life as Henry VIII and his courtiers watched.  The reason for the sinking is hotly debated:  accurate French cannon fire\, a freak wave\, poor seamanship and overmanning are all suggested. \nAfter several unsuccessful attempts at salvage the remains of the hull were raised in 1982 and are now displayed at Portsmouth Dockyard. \nPlease register here to reserve your space.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 6.30pm on Tuesday\, 16 February on Zoom for an evening with distinguished Egyptologist Professor Toby Wilkinson who will be talking to John Raine about his most recent book A World Beneath the Sands and his career as an Egyptologist.     \nProfessor Toby Wilkinson is an internationally acclaimed Egyptologist and prize-winning author of twelve books translated into as many languages and lectures around the world on Egyptian history\, ancient and modern.  With a first class degree and PhD in Egyptology from the University of Cambridge\, Toby is a Bye-Fellow of Clare College\, Cambridge\, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Historical Society\, and is a member of the international editorial board of The Journal of Egyptian History.  Toby was appointed Vice Chancellor of Fiji National University in 2020\, and before this was Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln.    \nJohn Raine CMG OBE is member of the Lincolnshire Committee of the ESU.  Like Toby\, he has a long professional connection with the Middle East.  He  served as an Arabist in the UK Diplomatic Service for over 30 years in several Middle Eastern countries until his retirement in 2017.  He is currently Senior Adviser at the international Institute of Strategic Studies in London where he specialises on the Middle East. \nThe event is free with donations welcome.  For further details please email camilla.carlbom@carlbom.co.uk.

Vowing to improve\, he joined a public speaking club. In 2017\, he was placed 2nd out of 30\,000+ competing speakers in the Final of the World Championship of Public Speaking held in Vancouver\, Canada. \nA full-time speaker since August 2008 (an interesting time to launch a business) Simon has helped tens of thousands of people from all walks of life to achieve greater impact through the spoken word. \nHe has delivered inspiring\, interactive sessions for audiences all over the world. Clients include General Electric\, Chivas Regal\, DPD\, Shell\, NatWest\, Imperial Business School and HgCapital. In 2017\, he was the opening speaker for TEDxLondon at The Royal Festival Hall\, on the need for public speaking skills to be taught in schools. \nSimon is an Adjunct Faculty member at Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government and a Visiting Fellow in Professional Skills at Cambridge University. \nHis career spans corporate executive headhunting\, brand strategy consulting plus a stint working in the House of Commons. Each has a story to tell about the history and growth of the city\, from the city’s origins as the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Brycstow (the “Place of the Bridge”) to the present day. SUMMARY:ONLINE EVENT: WHY DO WE DEBATE?
DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore the purpose of debate in civil society.  \nThe discussion\, chaired by Prof. James Raven\, Chair of the ESU\, will be led by our panel: Dr Katie East\, Lecturer in the History of Radical Ideas at Newcastle University; Bilal Mahmood\, ESU Governor\, senior legal consultant for China Construction Bank\, and internationally acknowledged mentor to generations of young debaters; and Christopher L. Peterson\, the Democratic candidate for the Governorship of Utah and John J. Flynn Endowed Professor of Law at the University of Utah. Fittingly\, Prof. Peterson and his Republican counterpart\, Spencer Cox\, recently issued a joint TV advertisement calling for ‘Civility in debate’ especially to set an example to the young in the US.  \nProfessor James Raven\, Chair of the English-Speaking Union\, says: ‘At its best\, debate should be a collaborative\, solution-focused process and yet\, in these polarised times\, public debate so often quickly descends into personal attacks or a refusal to engage.
