William Waldegrave (Lord Waldegrave of North Hill) has been Provost of Eton College since 2009, the most senior post at perhaps the most famous school in the world. A former politician, he held ministerial positions in the governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major, including Secretary of State for Health, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and Chief Secretary to the Treasury. His role in government was at the centre of a major enquiry into arms to Iraq. He has been a key figure in the business world and in education, including being the current Chancellor of the University of Reading. He is also a respected author. In this conversation with Alastair Niven, co-chair of the ESU Events Committee, he reviews the ups and downs of his political career and talks about his vision for secondary education today.
