Did you know we offer two or three term debating programmes for primary aged pupils? Find out more about our latest offer and how to get involved.
As part of the English-Speaking Union’s centenary year and our ongoing mission to engage as many young people in oracy as possible, we’re delighted to be able to offer our Discover Debating programme to 100 schools across the country, free of charge.
Discover Debating is a two- or three-term programme which uses debate to improve primary school students’ literacy and oracy skills. It helps teachers to demonstrate their students’ progress across many core areas of the KS2 curriculum, in particular in spoken language, and creates a sustainable culture of debating within schools. Using fun, engaging games and activities, it helps students think critically about important issues and makes them better able to understand and express both sides of an argument.
This initiative will enable thousands of primary school children from all areas of England and Wales to learn and improve on the many and varied skills that go into debating, from analysis and knowledge of current affairs to speaking, listening and presentation.
‘After participating in the ESU’s debating programmes students are more willing to volunteer in class and more able to interact with their peers with greater confidence and assertiveness,’ says George Bainbridge, ESU Mentor.
