In December debaters from across the world flocked to the Hague for the World Universities Debating Championship that would determine the new World Champions.
After 10 intense rounds of debating Raffy Marshall, a Team England Alumnus from 2015 has been crowned the best speaker in the world!
Raffy spoke with Sophie Large (a mentor at Debate Academy 2016) to represent Oxford University A. They made the Open Grand Final of the competition, speaking on the motion: This house would apply universal jurisdiction to crimes against the environment. The Open Grand Final was won by Emma Johnstone and James Leeder from the University of Sydney Union.
Archie Hall, who won the World Schools Debating Championship with Team England in 2016 also performed exceptionally well. Archie and his debate partner Alex Wu, made it to the Octofinal of the Championship representing Harvard University. Although only in his first year of university, he has become the 16th best speaker in the world.
