Lila Das Gupta studied politics at London University and worked as a producer and reporter for the BBC World Service for many years. Her journalism has included columns for The Daily Telegraph and BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine and she has also contributed to The Guardian and The Financial Times. An avid researcher, Lila has an interest in the chemistry and science behind olfaction, as well as an appreciation for the sheer beauty perfume has to offer.

Christmas Carol Concert

The English-Speaking Union warmly invites you to Dartmouth House for this year's carol concert.

One of the highlights of the ESU's events calendar is undoubtedly the Christmas Carol Concert - an opportunity for members, alumni, guests and members of the public to come together in the spirit of festive cheer for mince pies, carols, and a glass or two of mulled wine!

This year is no exception, and we are delighted to welcome you all to Dartmouth House on the evening of Tuesday 11 December.

Introducing our Choral Scholars from the ORNC Chapel Choir with guest Director of Music, Timothy Teague.

Since 2001, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance has provided music at the Old Royal Naval College Chapel. Trinity Laban is the only Conservatoire in the UK to support a Collegiate Chapel Choir, which is one of the most outstanding sacred music ensembles in London. Many members of the choir are drawn from the Conservatoire, including a number of choral scholars (two sponsored by the Dame Susan Marden Charitable Trust), but there are also a number of places in the choir for experienced and outstanding local volunteer singers. The choir is supported by an Assistant Organist (James Grainger) and the Director of Chapel Music (Ralph Allwood).

The choir only gives approximately one hundred public performances each year. Its primary purpose is to enhance the liturgy and worship of the ORNC Chapel

Christmas Raffle

As ever, this year the ESU will be raising money to support its central charitable activities through the grand Christmas raffle. Previous prizes have included a Hamper from Fortnum & Mason, a selection of books signed by the author, a meal for two in the Revelstoke Restaurant, and £100 of John Lewis vouchers.

Prizes for this year's raffle will be confirmed closer to the event, and tickets will go on sale in Dartmouth House at the beginning of December.

If you would like to donate a raffle prize, please contact James Ward, Business Development Director, on 020 7529 1576 or by email at james.ward@esu.org.

Book Tickets

Every year, tickets to the carol concert sell out extremely quickly, so to avoid disappointment please book as soon as possible.

Tickets are £25 for members or alumni of the ESU, and £27 for guests and members of the public. To book your tickets, please contact James Ward, Director of Business Development, on 020 7529 1576.

Literary Evening: Norinka Ford - The Flowing Line

Evocative and elegantly written, Norinka captures the fascinating story of her family, a story moulded and shaped by the history of the twentieth century. The reader is transported back to the dark days of World War II and all that was ugly during that era, yet there remains a glimmer of hope, a candle of light in the form of love that illuminates the darkness.

Norinka was able to travel extensively as a consequence of her father´s diplomatic career and as a result we are given tantalizing glimpses of the various countries that she has lived in, countries as diverse as Iraq, Syria, Chile, Norway, India, and Brazil. Her love of poetry fills the pages of the book, adding personal meaning to each chapter.

This book is a unique family history. It is an incredible story of what was seen, heard, felt and experienced by her and members of her family. It is a story that gives us a fascinating insight into the past as well as giving the reader an opportunity to enjoy the ineffable scenery from various corners of the world - Josceline Dimbleby, Author

Join the ESU for a literary evening to celebrate the release of The Flowing Line from 6.30 pm with a drinks and canapé reception, followed by a talk by Norinka Ford at 7 pm. Copies of The Flowing Line will be available to purchase after the talk, signed by the author.

<pbaskerville><pbaskerville>Classical Kicks is a unique night of music performance. Hailed by Classical Music Magazine as “genre-bending”, Classical Kicks will bring the most talented, exciting and diverse classical artists into the intimate space of Dartmouth House and, whilst maintaining the best quality of musicians and musicianship, creates a lot of fun in the process.

<pbaskerville><pbaskerville>Founded in 2012 with a residency in London’s legendary Ronnie Scotts’s Club, Classical Kicks embodies the idea of bending the genre of classical music to fit into the modern day reality of classical music talent. This is a specially curated evening for the ESU featuring music from the classical, folk, Latin and jazz worlds - from South African lullabies, Argentinian Vidalas, to Scottish traditional melodies.<pbaskerville><pbaskerville><pbaskerville><pbaskerville><pbaskerville>

<pbaskerville>Lizzie Ball has never stuck to the rules of classical music. Following in the footsteps of her idol Nigel Kennedy for whom she now is concertmeister she has blazed a unique path through the music world. As a scholar and graduate of St. John’s College, Cambridge and the Royal College of Music, Lizzie’s technique and intellect are ferocious in equal measure and this, coupled with her unforgettable stage presence, has taken Lizzie around the world playing and singing from sold out festivals in Mexico to the hallowed boards of the Wigmore Hall. She has collaborated and played with a huge range of artists from the aforementioned classical wild-child Nigel Kennedy and London’s Philharmonia to pop and rock legends Nitin Sawhney and Kanye West. Lizzie is also a firm believer in education and as such has lead workshops in numerous schools in the UK and across Latin America as well as musical sessions on business development for many companies including Saatchi and Saatchi.

<pbaskerville><pbaskerville>
Tickets: £10 members and alumni, £15 guests.
<pbaskerville>
To book tickets please visit www.classicalkicks.eventbrite.com

</pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville>

<pbaskerville>
Formed in late September 2010, The Bookshop Band write songs inspired by books, and play them in bookshops. The band began as a collaboration with Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights, in Bath (Independent Bookshop of the Year 2008 / 2011) as part of a plan to help Mr B’s rejuvenate its traditional ‘author evenings’. The band would read the forthcoming author’s book in advance and write two songs based upon it, to be performed at the start of the evening. Their performances are inextricably linked to the booksthemselves, as the members of the band take it in turns to describe where the inspiration for each song came from. Over this period they have been featured on 6Music / The Today Program / Front Row / BBC 1 News / The Guardian among others.
<pbaskerville><pbaskerville>
During 2012 the band have written a further three albums and hope to record them for release in early 2013.
<pbaskerville><pbaskerville>
Come and join us for an entertaining evening of music and literature.

<pbaskerville> <pbaskerville>
Tickets: £7 members and alumni, £10 guests.
<pbaskerville>
To book tickets visit www.bookshopband.eventbrite.com

</pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville></pbaskerville>
