“[Chautauqua] has its own mythic force… There is no place like it. No resort. No spa. Not anywhere else in the country, or anywhere else in the world. It is at once a summer encampment and a small town, a college campus, an arts colony, a music festival, a religious retreat, and a village square. It is all of these, and none of these just.”
David McCullough, historian
The Chautauqua Intuition is a not-for-profit educational centre situated on the west side of the 20-mile long Lake Chautauqua in upper New York State. The emphasis of their legendary intellectual Summer Sessions is to provide a unique cultural experience to those teachers who have a particular interest in wider education. A wide variety of courses, lectures and events are offered, usually in the fields or art, music, literature, education, business, religion and international relations. There is an opera, play or concert almost every evening and daily public lectures dealing with current political, economic and social issues. Recreational facilities include swimming, sailing, water-skiing and tennis.
The scholarship covers all board, tuition and lecture sessions. Scholars are responsible for travel and incidental expense which are offset by a grant of £850 from the ESU. The summer school runs from the end of June, scholars can visit for up-to 4 weeks.
Please apply direct to the ESU if you are only applying for Chautauqua.
If you are applying for both Chautauqua and Walter Hines Page you should apply direct to your teaching union.
