“[Chautauqua] is at once a summer encampment and a small town, a college campus, an arts colony, a music festival, a religious retreat, and a village square. It is all of these, and none of these just.”
David McCullough, historian
Applications for the summer of 2013 are now closed. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview at Dartmouth House in London on 15 March, 2013.
The Chautauqua Intuition is a not-for-profit educational centre situated on the west side of the 20-mile long Lake Chautauqua in upper New York State. The emphasis of their legendary intellectual Summer Sessions is to provide a unique cultural experience to those teachers who have a particular interest in wider education. A wide variety of courses, lectures and events are offered, usually in the fields or art, music, literature, education, business, religion and international relations. There is an opera, play or concert almost every evening and daily public lectures dealing with current political, economic and social issues. Recreational facilities include swimming, sailing, water-skiing and tennis.
The scholarship is funded by award-winning philanthropist, Carol Duhme, and covers board, tuition and lecture sessions. Travel expenses are offset by a grant of £850 from the ESU. Scholars can spend 2-6 weeks at Chautauqua, beween late June and late August.
The application closing date for 2014-15 is Monday 25 November, 2013. Please download the notes and application form below for information on how to apply. Interviews will be held in London in March 2014.
