English in Action

English in Action is a volunteer-led English language support programme aimed at non-native English speakers to improve their confidence and conversational ability. English in Action originated at the English-Speaking Union in New York and was introduced to the UK by a former tutor in the American scheme, Alison Wheatcroft.

We currently run one hour one-to-one relaxed, informal sessions once a week. Each term consists of ten weeks. Our students range in age and ability from a number of different countries.

Terms

There are 3 terms each year. The dates are flexible but each term lasts 10 weeks:

Spring term: January - March

Summer term: May - July

Autumn term: September – November

Students

This programme will help you to gain confidence and skills in understanding and speaking English. You will learn more about the UK and British culture while teaching your British partner about your own country and customs. Students should have a basic level of English to take part as this is not an English language teaching course.

Fees

Registration - £25

10 week term fee - £70

£50 for university students

Free for those receiving income support.

Volunteer tutors

Volunteering with the English in Action programme is a fun and rewarding experience. You'll be able to learn more about the culture of a new country and have a deeper understanding of British heritage. In exchange, you will help your student to improve their conversational ability and adjust to life in the UK. We're looking for enthusiastic volunteer tutors who can make a difference in students' lives. All our students are adults with good, basic English so you won't need any teaching experience; you'll just need to be fluent in English, good at communicating and passionate about promoting international understanding.

Testimonials

“I am very lucky to have met such a wonderful tutor!” (student).

“I wanted to volunteer to meet new people from different cultures. I have really enjoyed getting to experience other people’s lives and give them a helping hand to settle into the British way of life” (tutor).
